Help Mandi Heal

For 30 years, Mandi has been a cherished member of the Dubai community, bravely living with MS for 21 of those years. Recently, she experienced a severe collapse, which has been particularly devastating given her history as an independent, creative, and passionate individual. After two months in the hospital, she is now in supportive care, facing a grim prognosis that necessitates full-time assistance.

A little over two months ago, Mandi was hospitalised in Dubai following a relapse that severely impaired her mobility. A month later, she suffered a severe MS attack, leaving her completely paralyzed. She can no longer eat, drink, or speak, relying on a feeding tube and multiple medications. Although Mandi cannot respond, she is aware of her surroundings, making her condition all the more distressing for her and her loved ones, as she is effectively imprisoned in her own body.

Recently, Mandi was repatriated to her homeland of New Zealand for further medical care. Due to her pre-existing condition, she was uninsured, resulting in exorbitant medical costs in Dubai, now approaching €90,000 (Euro) and without a final figure the horizon. Her return to New Zealand alone required the purchase of 11 seats on an Emirates Airbus A380 to accommodate her stretcher and support team.

This situation is immensely taxing on Gerry, both emotionally and financially. With the approval of Gerry and Mandi’s sister Jo, we are reaching out to friends, colleagues, and the community for financial support to care for Mandi. She is currently in Christchurch Hospital undergoing additional tests and treatment, and she will eventually be moved to a suitable rehabilitation facility near her family.

Despite the bleak prognosis, we continue to hope for a miracle and surround Mandi with love.
