About a month ago, my brothers and I learned the most devastating news that children can hear: that their mom has cancer.
Our mom, Karen, has taken care of us through thick and thin. A single mom with very difficult circumstances, she has fed and clothed us through foreclosure, bankruptcy, and a brief period of homelessness. Despite increasingly poor health, she has worked full-time at Sears for several years, providing us with everything we needed to live and succeed. She has been the most hardworking, loving, and steadfast mother any kids could ask for. But now, she can't do everything she once could, and we are faced with the challenge of giving back to her even half of what she gave to us.
My mom has an esophageal tumor that has spread into her stomach. She is undergoing six weeks of chemo-radiation, a debilitating process that may or may not shrink her tumor to an operable size. She was my primary financial provider, and while my brothers are doing all they can financially to support my mom and I, we are scrambling to find a way to make by. My brother Alex and I give her care at home and work as hard as we can, but putting together money for groceries is already becoming an increasingly tricky challenge, and paying bills is even harder. My mom needs lots of nourishing food to avoid needing hospitalization and a feeding tube (she is 5 foot 8 and weighed 110 pounds at her last appointment), the cost of which we are struggling to meet. Our goals are to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads, but even these basic things are not guranteed to a single-provider family in poverty dealing with cancer.
In this time of need, I turn to the many beautiful friends I have in my life. Nothing will help us through this difficult time better than love and support from wonderful people. These will be the most challenging months of our lives, and it would mean so, so much to have allies cheering us on, supporting us, and loving us.
No one knows better than us how difficult financial situations can be, so please only give what you can - anything, including kind words, makes a difference.
Thank you for helping us through this. With you at our side, I know Mama Smith will make it out OK.
On our wish list, you will find a couple small ways you can help make a big difference. Additionally, feel free to contact me via Facebook or GoFundMe if you would like to help in an alternate way, such as cooking or baking food or sending a gift card.
I love you all, and thank you. <3
Love and light,
-Chelsea
