"Malti" - Short Film

"Malti is an ode to the silent women in relationships"

Malti is a short film that tells the story of a woman, also named Malti, as she discovers that her husband has cheated on her through the change of fragrance on his shirt.

Malti is holding tightly onto her relationship as it rapidly deteriorates in front of her, and she is faced with the dichotomy of leaving or staying in it because of a changed cologne that's haunting her every day. Malti follows the underlying theme of infidelity but our main objective is to show how you must maintain boundaries in love.

"Love is difficult. It's difficult to hold onto and it's also difficult to let go of. But love shouldn't be unfair. Love shouldn't be painful".

This film explores the themes of love and betrayal as it takes the audience on an emotional journey with Malti as she decides how to move forward with her life. Through this film, we don't want to say that men cheat more often than women. This isn't about gender. This is about realizing what's wrong and facing it.

Our goal with this film is to start a conversation about the impact of infidelity on relationships and the importance of self-care and self-love. We hope to inspire audiences to prioritize their well-being and to be honest with themselves and their partners about their needs, desires and their worth.

Malti means a "Tiny Fragrant Flower".

Malti is a 30-year-old woman who believes she is capable of sustaining her decaying relationship. Over the years of her marriage, she has slowly developed an anxious style of romance which has caused her to prioritize other people’s needs above hers. And we all know that good qualities can be a flaw if taken too far by people.

Jai is Malti's husband. He is a charming and charismatic man but tends to take Malti for granted. He is unfaithful to her and tries to hide it, but ultimately his actions are discovered by Malti. His betrayal causes a rift in their relationship that may be irreparable.

The other woman is a young and attractive woman, with whom Jai has been cheating on Malti.

By using this term we don't mean to deteriorate women who are a part of extramarital affairs. They are not to be blamed. Our objective is to show the reality hence the use of this term.

The look of the film will be gritty and raw, with our focus on capturing the emotions that Malti is experiencing. Throughout the film, we will not see the husband's face. We know he's there, we know what he did. But we never see his face. "Because the mere truth of infidelity is enough to break a relationship".

We will be using the idea of reality and illusion throughout the film to enhance the visuals and also focus on Malti's emotions.

The reality - Wide Shots, Medium Shots, Deep depth of field.
This is when everything in the house is in focus. The house is trying to tell Malti that something's wrong with her relationship. Relationships are also related to the space one lives in. Hence we wish to constantly use the house as a reminder of the decaying relationship.

The illusion - Close-up shots, shallow depth of field.
Everything in the background is blurred. Malti is ignoring the reality of her relationship which is why everything around her is blurred.

In our day sequences we will be utilizing the desaturated tones of blue around the house as if the house is attempting to warn Malti that something's wrong. At the same time, the use of natural light will reduce to a minimum, trying to indicate that the hope is leaving the house.

On the other hand, our night scenes will have a warm saturated look, having a small light be the source. In these scenes, when the husband comes back, Malti tries to find a ray of hope in her relationship (a small source of tungsten light ). This small light is her hope. However, it's not strong enough to light the whole room. The blue light will always be somewhere in the background to be a constant reminder of the broken marriage.

Centre framing, eye level - Malti will be centre framed when she's making decisions for herself in the film. This happens only twice. Once in the beginning and once in the end.

Profile shots, high and low angles - Throughout most of the film we will be using profile shots to show the instability in the relationship and also in Malti's decisions.

We are a group of filmmakers who are deeply passionate about our craft, and we firmly believe in the transformative power of storytelling. Our team is dedicated to bringing this story to life with the utmost care and attention to detail, and we are working tirelessly to ensure that every aspect of the film is executed to perfection. From the casting of the actors to the selection of the shooting locations, we are leaving no stone unturned in our quest to create a truly memorable and impactful cinematic experience.

Mrunal Mestri is an award-winning writer, director and producer - currently working in Los Angeles. She has written, directed and produced - 10 of her short films. She's been working in the industry for the past four years. She's deeply passionate about telling stories that delve deeper into exploring relationship dynamics and she works hard toward bringing her vision to life.

Her recent short film - "Voler" has won 11 awards and received four official selections at film festivals. She won four awards in the category of "best directing" and four in the category of "best writing and "best short film".

With Malti being her next directorial, she hopes for it to be even bigger and better with its production value and festival run.

Our ultimate goal is to raise enough funds to ensure that our project is created safely and efficiently. We are striving to secure full funding, which would allow us to compensate our cast and crew fairly for their valuable time and extensive experience. In addition, we would be able to afford the best equipment and materials for the project, which would greatly enhance the overall quality of the final product. With the additional funds, we would also be able to allocate more resources towards marketing and promotion of the project, ensuring that it reaches a wider audience and has a greater impact.

But the dream doesn't stop there!

With the additional funds that we hope to raise through our stretch goal, we will be able to take our film to the next level. The funds will enable us to hire an experienced editor and sound designer, who will work with all of our footage to bring out the best in every shot. This will ensure that our film is polished and of the highest quality possible.

Once post-production is complete, we will use the money from the stretch goal to submit our project to film festivals all over the world. This will give our film the exposure it needs to reach a wider audience and connect with people on a global level. We believe that our film has the potential to make a real impact and spark important conversations about relationships and infidelity, and we want to share it with as many people as possible.

We have already invested a significant amount of time and resources into this project, but we need your help to bring it to completion. Your donation will go towards covering the costs of equipment rental, location fees, transportation, and hiring a talented cast and crew.
