Mallory had emergency open heart surgery

Hello!

My name is Rebecca Preston and I am making this GoFundMe for my older sister, Mallory Burleson.

A little background…
Mallory was diagnosed with a bad case of Crohn’s Disease, an autoimmune disease, at the age of 9. She’s undergone many medical procedures throughout her life because of it.

What happened…
March 7th-11th both Mallory and her daughter, Savannah, were home with what you and I would consider ‘the flu’. Savannah overcame it quickly, but because of Mallory’s Crohn’s her immune system just wasn’t strong enough to fight it. My mom had been checking on her daily, but on March 16th found her very unstable, called the ambulance, and Mallory was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. ‘The flu’ turned into double pneumonia and then the infection got into her blood stream- she went into sepsis shock.

Mallory was sent straight to ICU from the ER. She was severely dehydrated and her major body organs were all shutting down. With IV antibiotics not improving her condition, the doctors made the decision to put her on a ventilator and intubate her on March 18th, 2022. The doctors pretty much put her in a medically induced coma. After MANY MANY MANY days (and tests) a team of heart doctors and infectious disease doctors found the infection in her heart and innertwined around her pacemaker she had put in a little over a year ago. The team of doctors decided there was no antibiotic to take care of the infection at its current size, so they decided open heart surgery was the only option.

Mallory was taken into open heart surgery on March 28th, 2022 to remove her pace maker and clean her heart the best they could to try and get rid of the infection. The surgeon said when he made his incision the puss nearly touched the ceiling! Miraculously the surgery was successful and Mallory is now in recovery.

She has a very long road to recovery. She is finally is off the ventilator and is working to be weaned off the tracheostomy. She also had to have a toe amputated as a result of her body shutting down. She is extremely weak and will soon be moved to the rehabilitation floor where she will work to regain her strength. She will have to relearn how to walk, talk, and swallow along with just basic strength building exercises. She has a lot of physically, occupational, and speech therapy in her future.

Mallory is a miracle! We didn’t think she was going to make it, but God answered our prayers! Mallory will have many medical bills to pay and due to being unable to work we are reaching out to family and friends to help her financially. Who at the age of 31 would except to have $10,000+ medical bills?!

Thank you for your love and support! Donations and shares are greatly appreciated!
