Malik's Transplant Blessing

Donation protected
My beautiful mother Malik Marshall A.K.A. MeMe to four grandchildren and loving mother of two needs a life-saving intestinal transplant. In 2001 after surgery, she suffered a bowel leakage and obstruction due to a careless doctor's mistake. She became septic and lost a large amount of her small bowel/intestines. She then went into a comatose state for weeks with family and friends praying feverishly for a positive outcome. After numerous more surgeries and learning to walk and talk again she recovered, but we all knew her life would never be the same.

Throughout the years she has suffered from more bowel obstructions and an extensive amount of scar tissue from surgeries, which led to more surgeries and the removal of more intestines. An average adult has about 25 feet of intestines while my mother has now less than 3 feet. As a result of not having a normal amount, she doesn't absorb nutrients from food and drink which causes extensive malnutrition and dehydration. The condition is medically known as Short Bowel Syndrome.

For the last 10 years years on and off but permantely the last 8 years, 7 days a week, 12 hours a day she receives all of her nutrients and vitamins via a solution named TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) through an IV catheter placed in her chest. Although TPN has proven to be life-saving she has now suffered several dangerous catheter infections, multiple central line infections, and vein scarring. She was recently diagnosed with Fibromuscular Dysplasia which causes narrowing and enlargement of the medium-sized arteries in your body. The narrowed arteries may reduce blood flow and affect the function of your organs. It appears most commonly in the arteries leading to the kidney and brain. This year she recently had aneurysms removed from both kidneys which added extra medical strain.

Although it's one of the most difficult transplants someone could have and would require my mother to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of her life it would give her an overall improved quality of life. Even after medical insurance, there are a lot of additional costs that aren't covered such as co-payments, transportation to and from the transplant hospital 3 to 4 times a week, and relocation expenses. She lives in Richmond Hill, GA, and will have to relocate to Miami, Florida where this is where the nearest transplant hospital is, and would have to live there for several months.

My mother is a very special part of our family and means the world to so many. her not being part of our lives is unimaginable. My brother and I recently lost our father this year and I couldn't bear to lose another parent who I also consider a best friend. Please consider contributing to her fund so she can receive this life-changing transplant. Life is precious and any donation or prayer you could offer would truly be giving her the gift of life.
