Any amount you can give today will help pay for Maliha’s cancer treatment in Kenya. She cannot wait much longer. Help today.
Maliha Idd is only 2-year old. Throughout 2020 her parents noticed that she was not as active as usual, she had whitish-looking spots on her tongue and was getting sick very often. Her parents didn’t think much of it at first. But in one of her hospital visits in January 2021, it became clear that something was seriously wrong.
She was sent to a bigger hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital. Her mother could not go with her because she had just given birth to Maliha’s sister. With a new baby at home, Maliha’s father accompanied Maliha to the hospital where they are right now waiting for help. Her father is a local tailor and their family cannot afford the costs of her treatment.
Maliha was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) on January 24th. AML is a type of blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow, the soft inner parts of bones, and interferes with normal blood cell production. In Kenya, the survival rate for those with AML is low, due in large part to a lack of access to treatment and support. But this doesn’t have to be Maliha’s fate.
Together we can help her. This fundraiser was set up by the Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship 2021 cohort at LSE because our colleague, Jeremiah, is a personal friend of Maliha’s father. In a year full of tragedies that are out of our control, we were inspired to help Maliha - getting her access to the treatment she needs is a problem that we can fix.
We are seeking to raise £30,000 to transfer Maliha to a facility that will offer the care she needs. With proper chemotherapy sessions and adequate care, we believe that Maliha will get the chance to have a normal childhood, go to school and watch her little sister grow up. Unfortunately, Maliha’s parents do not have the money or medical insurance to cover the costs of her treatment.
The money we raise will go towards:
1. Paying for her chemotherapy treatment
2. Securing her an ICU/HDU bed allocation
3. Continuous clinic visits to monitor her progress.
A generous donor has offered to give £10,000 for Maliha’s treatment if we are able to raise the remaining amount needed by Friday, February 19th. We are working on a short timeline because time is of the essence - the sooner Maliha starts treatment, the better chance she has at a happy, healthy life.
It’s been a hard year for so many, but any amount you can give will help us help Maliha. Can you help today?
