I’m devastated that two bright lights of the Malibu community, Kraig Hill and Hashi Clark, have lost their family home of 55 years due to the Palisades Fire—including their own artwork, musical instruments, books and organic gardens. Their house was a labor of love. Tragically, they had no insurance, having been dropped by their carrier years ago. I have come to know Hashi and Kraig well as a fellow Malibu Creek State Park & Adamson House volunteer docent. I cannot think of a pair more deserving of help after such a tragedy.
Kraig Hill volunteers as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Malibu, as a member of Arson Watch and with the Las Virgenes Federation. Prior to retirement, he enjoyed a dual career doing environmental analyses and producing music for up-and-coming artists. Now, he’s starting a new organization to foster long-range conservation of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Hashi Clark, Kraig’s long-time partner, is an artist, nature educator and the founder of the Santa Monica Mountains Nature Journal Club. She has served an incredible number of hours volunteering at Malibu Creek State Park as the interpretive committee chair—devoting her time to teaching kids about nature, developing and illustrating a Junior Ranger Book, restarting the Park’s Junior Ranger program, and so much more.
Together with their dog Bodie, they aren’t the glitzy, opulent types some folks associate with Malibu. They live close to the earth, embodying the rustic character that makes Malibu an attractive place to live. Knowing the value of community, they each give much more of themselves than most people ever even imagine.
“We need to keep Kraig and Hashi in town, to help restore and preserve Malibu as we’ve known it.” – Jefferson Wagner, former Mayor of Malibu
“Kraig and Hashi are always there for friends and neighbors, helping in every way they can to make our community better.” – Suzanne Guldimann, Malibu historian and Editor, Topanga New Times
“They’re pillars of the community, with the vision on how to rebuild back better. I love these guys.” – Jonathan Parfrey, Director, Climate Resolve (former Malibu resident).
“Their genuine enthusiasm for helping people is truly marvelous. It is a form of generosity that is vanishingly rare.” – Fiona Whitelaw, Professor of Anthropology
Kraig and Hashi lost nearly everything in the Palisades Fire. Please support these folks to help ensure that Malibu remains a wonderful place. Let’s help them to rebuild their lives and get them back on their land, so that they can keep helping others. Any amount you can contribute would be received with massively heartfelt gratitude. Hashi and Kraig request that you please do not contribute more than $500 (and nothing at all if you plan to have business before the Malibu Planning Commission.) Thank you so much!
