The Secret Trauma
Behind a Hidden Habit

We rescued our beloved dog, Malcolm, from a puppy mill back in 2019. Dogs from these tragic backgrounds often carry hidden psychological trauma. Unbeknownst to us, over the course of several years, Malcolm had developed a secret coping mechanism: scavenging and swallowing stray hair scrunchies when left alone.
Because he only did this in secret and the bands never passed in the yard, we had no idea he was quietly amassing hundreds of hairbands in his stomach.

A Sudden Crisis & A Mystery Medical Obstruction

His luck finally ran out when he suddenly hit rock bottom, stopped eating, and grew dangerously weak. We rushed him to the emergency vet with a life-threatening 41°C fever. A barium contrast study revealed a severe physical blockage, but the obstruction was so unusual that the X-rays were sent to specialists in Paris—and even they couldn’t identify the mystery object.
By the time the diagnosis was clear, Malcolm was in full sepsis.
Three Weeks in the ICU & Three Major Surgeries
What followed was an agonizing three-week battle in the intensive care unit. Malcolm had to undergo three separate emergency surgeries just to stay alive:

Surgery 1 (The Obstruction): The vet solved the mystery, removing a terrifying mountain of tangled hairbands alongside a portion of his damaged intestine.

Surgery 2 (Heart Complications): When his fever persisted, an ultrasound revealed fluid and infection behind his heart. Vets had to go back in to drain the fluid and clean the area.

Surgery 3 (The Final Battle): With his fever refusing to break, a third surgery was required to clear out a stubborn abdominal infection. Paired with a specialized antibiotic, this final procedure worked—his fever broke, and he slowly began to eat again.

An Unbreakable Spirit

On several occasions, our compassionate vet warned us that Malcolm might not make it and gently invited us to say our goodbyes. Before the third surgery, I asked him to be completely honest about how much Malcolmwas suffering.
His response gave us the hope we desperately needed. He told us that in his 30-year career, he had never seen a dog like Malcolm—because through all the pain, the surgeries, and the ICU stay, Malcolm’s tail never stopped wagging.

How You Can Help

Malcolm proved he has an extraordinary, unbreakable spirit and a fierce will to live. While we are endlessly grateful to have our miracle boy home, three grueling weeks in the ICU and three emergency surgeries have left us with an overwhelming financial burden.
Every single dollar, share, and prayer means the world to our family. If you are able to donate or share Malcolm's story with your network, we would be eternally grateful.
Thank you for your love, kindness, and support during this difficult journey.

With love and gratitude,
The Harper Family
