We are the family from Ukraine Galina, Kolia and our son Maksym.
Maksym is a very loving and positive boy. Like majority of the kids he lived an active life, went to the day care, played with children on the playground and even started attending football at the Academy of Early Football Development.
Half a year ago, Maksym suddenly got sick. That day we received a call from the day care. Maksym was constantly nauseous and next day we took him to the hospital, where he was taken into intensive care.
Later, Maksym started feeling better. The doctors suggested that it was ascariasis and assumed that our son should get well soon. However, Galina felt that something was wrong. We have asked for a second opinion from another doctor. After the examination Maksym was sent to MRI where they found a vex tumor 5x6 cm in the frontal areas of the head. Doctor immediately decided to operate.
The surgery was extremely complicated and lasted 8 hours. Unfortunately, surgeons could not remove the whole tumor. This is an exceedingly rare and overly aggressive tumor, called Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (ATRT). There are little studies of this type of tumor. Usually diagnosed in childhood.
After the surgery, Maksymko continued with a treatment: went through 6 complex chemotherapy treatments and 14 anesthetics. Doctors tried to collect his marrow cells and failed to do that.
We were contacting other clinics, doctors and different researchers with knowledge and experience treating this tumor. During online meeting with representatives from Sant Joan de Deu hospital we were offered a different treatment which cannot be done in Ukraine. Maksym will have to undergo another surgery, two cycles chemotherapy and three bone marrow transplants with high-dose chemotherapy in Barcelona. We are ready to do what it takes. Unfortunately, we cannot pay the bills with our love, good will and determination. That is why we are reaching out to people for the support. Every single euro will bring us closer to our aim.
The total amount for the surgery ant treatment is € 207.000. Of course, we will be trying to gather as much money as we can ourselves… it is just we are afraid it might take too long. There is no time to lose and that is why we need your help.
*All the money which will be not used will be donated to Cancer foundation in Ukraine, that is also helping us to arrange our trip to Barcelona.
