Mako's Mystery: Support His Recovery Journey
Donation protected
In late 2024, Mako was startled by a cat and landed on his back hind legs, causing a very serious unknown injury. Ever since, our once talkative, happy, spoiled, loving, lively energetic 4-year-old husky has been depressed, disengaged, lethargic and disinterested in all his usual activities. Most days he won’t eat, we have tried chicken, raw food, new food, our neighbors dog food. Some days we can get him to eat, by hand feeding him. And for a pup to love his home made salmon treats, he has no more interest in them. He has lost over 25 pounds and the muscle mass in his hind legs is diminishing. Despite physical and water therapy, pain medications, once-a-month Adequan Canine, numerous tests to include a clean blood panel and x-rays where two different veterinarians preformed two drawer test, with no signs of a tear in his back legs. Which leads us to believe it his lower spine area.
He has been to five veterinarians, Sylvan Corners Pet Hospital, Blue Cross Pet Hospital, Sierra Ranch Veterinary Clinic, UC Davis Veterinary Medicine ER, Meridian Pet Hospital and Chiropractor and our next hope is MarQueen Pet Hospital, none of which can accurately diagnose him with the state he is in. Now we are starting over and he requires a costly MRI $3,000 - $4,000 and surgery $7,000 - $10,000. The last diagnosis by UC Davis is assumed to be arthritis (mind you he is 4yo and both his sisters from the same liter he sees regularly are 100% healthy). Mind you this change of health came immediately after he was startled by the cat and Mako loves cats. His sister Tala has a cat, where he visits often for play dates and Mako loves cuddling up with their cat.
So the direction we are given now for the next steps are to explore neurological issues and or nerve damage with his spine, all which require extensive testing and more procedures.
He has always been very healthy, loves to sing, very talkative, loves the water and has dozens of pup friends he use to see every morning at the dog park.
Unfortunately, our reserves and emergency fund for our sweet boy that has been depleted with all the steps we have taken to now be back at square one is devastating to say the least, all we are praying for is answers so we can work towards relieving his pain, discomfort and depression.
Mako has another veterinary appointment on Friday, August 1st, and I will provide updates and timelines with next steps and hopefully get an MRI on the calendar.
He is the center of our world with in our small family and we would greatly appreciate any advice or thoughts if anyone has ever experienced this with a young dog, or if possible even just a few dollars to help him and us with the next big steps he will have to undergo to become healthy again, which will include a long recovery. We are trying anything we can to give happiness back to our sweet boy.
Thank you in advance even if you can just pass this along through your social media channels. It would mean the world to us and be such a blessing.
Below is just a fraction of some the vet visits, procedures and treatment's Mako’s has suffered through to treat his injuries.
