I’m Lulu Gephart, and I believe every family deserves the joy and ease of being in the water. For me, water has meant play, confidence, and connection to nature. Too many Black children and caregivers have not had the same access to safe, culturally welcoming swim instruction. Outdoor Afro’s swimmership program helps change that by meeting families where they are and creating joyful experiences around water.
Since 2019, Making Waves has given more than 7,000 swim scholarships so kids and their loved ones can learn life-saving swim and water skills. Outdoor Afro’s broader mission—celebrating and inspiring Black connections and leadership in nature—amplifies those outcomes by connecting families to fishing, kayaking, hiking, gardening, and more. These programs build skills, community, and a sense of belonging around our lands and waters.
I support Making Waves because teaching water safety is more than lessons; it is about creating memories, confidence, and long-term access to outdoor spaces for Black families. Your support helps provide scholarships, equipment, and culturally relevant instruction so more families can experience water without fear.
Please join me in supporting Outdoor Afro and Making Waves. Your donation will help ensure Black children and their families learn life-saving skills and enjoy the water with joy and confidence.
