Into Mayas' hands, a book they inspired

When A Woman Rises was published by Cinco Puntos Press in El Paso, Texas in September 2018. The book tells the story of a friendship between two Tsotsil-speaking Maya women from Chenalhó, Chiapas. With this book I believe that I’ve finally written something that the people who made my novel happen can read and enjoy, and in doing so be reminded of the creative spark they carry within themselves and encouraged to bring it out to the world.
In August in Chiapas, I shared my idea to make copies of my novel in Spanish available for free to original peoples there. Some of them have been writing poems, stories, and novels in Spanish and in their native languages and could have resented me for seeking support for my writing instead of theirs. But instead I received their gratitude and encouragement. Some told me they plan to use multiple copies of the book in reading circles. Others suggested that literate women and men can read the book out loud to their parents and grandparents who can’t read.
In recognition of the unusual nature of this book project, everyone involved in producing the Spanish version of the book has kindly given me generous discounts making it possible to carry out this project for only $10,500. The book will be printed in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas and from there 2,000 copies of Cuando una mujer se levanta will be made available for free to organizations, libraries, schools, and research institutes in Chiapas and to students in secondary and university in Guatemala and Belize who receive scholarships through the Maya Educational Foundation.

When A Woman Rises/Cuando una mujer se levanta fue publicado por Cinco Puntos Press en El Paso, Texas en septiembre de 2018. Esta novela relata la historia de una amistad entre dos mujeres Mayas –hablantes del tsotsil—de Chenalhó, Chiapas. Con esta novela siento que finalmente he escrito algo que puede ser disfrutado precisamente por la gente que habita mi novela y que, al mismo tiempo, reconozcan esa chispa creativa que ellos mismos poseen y que ofrecen al mundo.
Durante agosto en Chiapas compartí mi idea de hacer que el libro estuviera disponible en español y se repartiera de manera gratuita con los habitantes de los pueblos originales. Algunos de ellos han escrito poemas, cuentos, y novelas en español y en sus lenguas nativas y podrían haber resentido que yo buscara apoyo para mi escritura en vez de apoyar la suya. Sin embargo, de ellos recibí agradecimiento y respaldo. Algunos me dijeron que planean utilizar ejemplares del libro para que se utilicen en grupos de lectura. Otros sugirieron que mujeres y hombres letrados leyeran el libro en voz alta para aquellos padres y abuelos que no saben leer.
En reconocimiento por la inusual naturaleza de este Proyecto editorial, todos los involucrados en producir esta versión en español me han ofrecido generosos descuentos para hacer posible este proyecto por solo $10,500 dólares. El libro se imprimirá en San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas y a partir de ahí, 2,000 copias de Cuando una mujer se levanta estarían disponibles de forma gratuita para las organizaciones, bibliotecas, escuelas y centros de investigación en Chiapas y para estudiantes de secundaria y Universidad en Guatemala y Belice, alumnos que reciben becas a través de la Fundación Maya para la Educación.
