There's something pretty wonderful about our little bookstore in Pawleys Island: the happiness. We're not exaggerating when we say that 999 out of every 1,000 people who walk through our doors arrive smiling. Maybe it's because they live in this beautiful place. Maybe they're on vacation. Maybe they're treating themselves to a new book or looking for the perfect gift for someone they love. Or maybe there's just something about walking into a bookstore that makes the world feel a little brighter. Whatever the reason, they're happy to be here, and the best part is that we get to be part of that happiness.
At My Sister's Books & Gifts, we get to chat with people, help them discover a wonderful book, find just the right gift, or sometimes surprise them with a little something extra, like a cookie or a bookmark. Somehow, they almost always leave even happier than they arrived. That's the magic of this place. It's not just the books, and it's not just the gifts. It's the happiness that lives between the shelves. Speaking personally, I've never loved working anywhere more than I love working here. Even with a stellar team, running an independent bookstore isn't easy, but every day we get to be a small part of something good in people's lives. In a world that could use more happiness, we think that's worth holding onto.
Now we want to make room for more. More children's story times where little imaginations take flight. More book clubs where strangers become friends. More local authors and artisans sharing their talents and gifts. More family activities, creative workshops, and more reasons to gather. We have exciting ideas about what My Sister's Books & Gifts can become, and we're already taking steps to make them possible. We're clearing out stale inventory, rethinking how we use our space, and exploring new ways to make the store an even more welcoming destination where community, stories, and smiles meet.
Like many independent small businesses, we're navigating rising expenses, changing shopping habits, and some very real financial challenges. We know that if we want this little bookstore to have a long and happy future, we need to evolve, and making meaningful changes takes resources. This fundraiser will help stabilize the business, support essential operations, and create the financial runway we need through the end of 2026. Funds may go toward renovations, more inventory, more staff, operating expenses, needed improvements, and the development of community activities and new offerings. We also hope support may help with job creation and retention as funding and feasibility allow.
Because these needs continue over time, recurring donations would help us plan more confidently as we work to strengthen the bookstore's foundation and make thoughtful improvements. One-time donations are also deeply appreciated and will help us take meaningful steps forward right away.
