Making Howdyland Happen

Hi there,
We're JB Tang Jackson and Dom Gélin; and we're writing a musical! Earlier this year, we were tapped to develop a new project with Live & In Color. Our show? A musical whose purpose was to add color to old westerns and, of course, make it gayer. It turns out: we're not the only ones who are into that. And that's how Howdyland! is becoming a reality.
Throughout this process, we are working on the book (aka, the script for any non-theater folks here); we are writing the music, recording demos of each song, and having each piece transcribed. We're also planning a trip to the east coast for a two-week workshop at The Bingham Camp that will culminate in a staged presentation to an invited audience.
All of this is very exciting and also very expensive. We do receive a stipend, but it does not cover all the costs- that's where you come in. With your support, we'll be able to afford the transcriptions and travel, and even do things like eat while we're at The Bingham Camp.
What does the money cover?
- Flights. It's costing us exactly $1,136.48 to get to the east coast and back.
- Music Production. We worked with a producer to cut the first three demo's for a music director. It was pretty cool to just get to focus on making the music and let someone else do all the button pushing. It was also $250.
- Music transcription. Fun fact: Even though we're writing about ten songs for the show, we don't know how to read or write music. So we're paying someone to do it for us. With a discount, we're looking at $495.
- A little something for our time... Since this process began in April, we've logged just over 80 hours, written 10 songs, 67 pages, 4 drafts (and started over 1 time), and that's all before we get to The Bingham Camp for a week of rehearsals and rewrites.
- ...and sanity. Those 80 hours? Those are just the hours we were working at the same time. It doesn't include any of the asynchronous work: script rewrites, recording the rest of the song list on our own, wondering what kind of hat a person who only exists on paper would really like. Think of the angst!
"Alright, my interest is piqued. When can I see it?"
The show itself will premier at Live & In Color in 2023. After our NY premiere, we hope to bring Howdyland to the Bay and to SoCal.
