My name is Christina Kortum. Ever since I was a kid I have loved monster movies, halloween movies, and haunted houses. If there was a creature running around, I was hooked.
Not surprisingly, when I grew up I became a special effects makeup artist. I even opened a special effects makeup shop. Ravenous Studios has been open since 2009 because of the wonderful support of the Portland film community. The picture above is my work.
For many years I have dreamed of making a monster of solely my own design. Most of the time I am creating creatures for a production, and therefore tied to the script that is supplied and the director’s vision. I’ve always wondered what was possible if left to my own devices. This is a dream I’ve had since I was kid.
Unfortunately I live a very hand to mouth existence here in Portland. Budgets are tight, I’m supporting a family....and since I usually only work when fx are needed or as a day player I find myself scrabbling to get by much of the year. There is neither time nor money to do my own personal projects, and so the dream sits and waits.
Those that know me from the film industry know how dedicated and passionate I am about special makeup effects. I give it my all to productions, and really enjoy what I do. As an artist though, I would love to do a project for the sheer love of monster making.
If you find it in your heart to donate, you are helping a lifelong dream come true for an artist. I promise I will document the madness and mayhem, and probably some pretty silly moments along the way. Monster making is expensive unfortunately, and the goal I’ve set won’t cover everything. It will be a true creative challenge. I’m up for it, and I hope you are interested in coming on this creative adventure with me!
Thank you for your time and consideration.
