Warriors for Reed

Hi!  My name is Reed Sabins.  I am 2-years and 4 months old (give or take a couple of days).

My twin brother, Micah was born healthy, but the doctors discovered that I had CHARGE syndrome, which is a genetic mutation of the 7th chromosome.  Mommy says, "it's like the foreman at a construction site. If the foreman tells the window guys to do drywall and the drywall guys to go do landscaping, everything will end up just a little funky." The specific gene that's mutated is "in charge" of my fetal development and has made lots of developmental issues that have caused me to spend way too much time in the hospital.

When I was born, my body basically had holes everywhere.  My eyes have retinal colobomas (holes in the back lining), my face had a unilateral left-sided cleft lip and bilateral cleft palate.  Even my mouth wasn't connected to my stomach,  so when I was just 96-hours old, I had my first surgery.

My heart had 5 birth defects (ASD, VSD, DORV, PDA, & Vascular ring). Luckily, they have been fixed with two surgeries in 2014 and 2015.

I also have a hard time breathing because of severe tracheomalacia.  Basically, my trachea collapses every time I breathe.  I got my trach in 2014.  But the doctors say I'm a miracle because they don't understand how I can breathe on my own.

Also, my intestines are malrotated and I had another surgery in 2014.  My cleft has had two surgeries in 2015 and my mommy and daddy scheduled another for this winter.

Like I said, I've spent a lot of time in the hospital and that's where I am right now.  I'm in a medically induced coma because my heart wasn't strong enough for the surgery I had the day before Thanksgiving.  You see, I was also born deaf.  I got a Cochlear Implant in January of 2016, but I'm missing a the cochlear nerve, so it doesn't work.  So, my mommy and daddy decided to schedule me for an upgrade--an Auditory Brainstem Implant. I was supposed to get it in July, but I went septic the day before. Thank goodnesss I survived that, but at the same time the doctors found a blood clot from my hip to my ankle.  I've had to get yucky shots twice a day since to fix it.  The surgeon said I could try the surgery again once I got better and that's originally why I was here.

I know that my mommy and daddy love me very much, and they've spent so much time worrying about me.  I also know there are lots of bills, and lost time from work, as well as time away from my two brothers.  I just want to do something nice for them, and although they've never asked for help, I know they could use it.  Especially at Christmas-time.  So, if you could pray for my daddy Josh, mommy Stacia, and my two brothers, I would appreciate it.  And, if your heart is led to give, we could really use your help.

"And so, as Tiny Tim said, "A Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us, every one!"
