Makeovers That Matter (MTM) evolved out of founder Michael John Derricott’s personal commitment to giving back to underserved communities.  Using his skills as a hair stylist, he devoted time each week at a homeless shelter helping women feel better about their appearance. In 2012, realizing that in order for these people to achieve meaningful lives, a cut, color and makeup was not enough. With this in mind, he formed Makeovers That Matter a 501(c)3 nonprofit. 

The organization's mission is to the empower women returning from military service and the wives and widows of veterans who have served our nation. MTM’s focus is to supply these women with the right tools to re-enter the workforce.

According to the USC Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families and the 2016 Report on the Status of Women in Los Angeles County, in Los Angeles County alone there are 19, 380 female Veterans.  Of the unemployeed veterans coming home, three-fourths report they are not getting assistance in finding a job. More than two-thirds of veterans surveyed reported difficulty in adjusting to civilian life and not knowing where to go or whom to contact to get help.  At least 40 percent of those surveyed reported leaving the military with no permanent housing or living arrangements in place.  Five in 10 veterans reported having a significant physical or mental health issue but not receiving care for it.  

Not all female Veterans are in need, but for those that are, Makeovers That Matter is the only nonprofit organization that provides a holistic workforce preparedness approach to mental/physical health and financial viability. In order to continue our work with these Veterans, we have a goal to raise $10,000, Which would cover the cost of an entire Mindset Program for 15 women, by November 27, 2016 .
