Medical expenses for Joe

Donation protected
On Friday evening, February 21st 2020, while most of us were settling into weekend plans, Joe was fighting for his life. He was running on an austere trail in the Olympic National Forest when he slipped on a patch of ice and heard a distinct snap. He was 12 miles into a 20 mile run, the sun was setting, and his ankle was suddenly in two pieces. Due to the geographical location of his accident cell service was several miles back in the direction where he began his run. Staying put meant help could be days away. With little time spent in recollection of what had happened Joe began to crawl. On his hands and knees through a rocky, wet, obstacle laden trail, dragging behind him his broken leg, he inched forward. For 8 hours he made slow progress towards the trail head before cell service was available. He made successful contact with 911 dispatch, however it would be another four hours before help arrived. Due to the perpetual decline in temperature Joe needed to continue moving to avoid the onset of hypothermia. Search and rescue found him around 5 am, nearly 12 hours after the injury. He was airlifted by the US Coast Guard to a Seattle hospital where a successful surgery put him back together. We, his family and loved ones, are immensely grateful in his fortune to have survived this incident. While the worst part is over, Joe has found himself in some degree of financial hardship. We are raising money to help alleviate some of his medical expenses. You can read more about this story in the links below. Donations that exceed expenses will be given to Jefferson County Search and Rescue, they are the individuals who found Joe. *Joe sent me this photo from the hospital prior to surgery
