Today I am asking for the support of a “village” to help a women that inspires me daily. I met Harmony through a mentoring program. She immediately impressed me with her inner strength and quiet confidence. In recent months both of those traits have been rattled by some serious dental issues. She has never asked me for anything EXCEPT advice and perhaps a pep talk or two….Now I am asking you to help her get something that she needs but isn’t in a place to provide for herself…INCREDIBLE DENTAL CARE. This is a woman who is going to make a difference in this world and is raising children who will make a difference. I know from deep within my soul that they will all “pay it forward”. She just can't do it on her own right now. Read her story below. Harmony is a role model to me! Can you help make her smile? I am happy to answer any questions or provide more detail.
HARMONY DAVIS
ABOUT ME: Ever since I was a young child, I have learned to overcome adversity. I was placed in the foster care system, after my mother passed away, until I was adopted at eight. I encountered significant struggles, including years of mental, physical, and sexual abuse, and schooling was very challenging. There were many who did not believe I would graduate High School. It wasn’t until late into my twenties, that I recognized that I am capable of doing whatever I choose in my life. I am determined to finish my education and work hard in order to build a good life for myself and my amazing children.
I am a single mother of three; Braden (16), Kade (14), and I recently adopted my daughter Kinsley (2). When I was a junior in college, I was contacted by Arizona’s child protection services, who explained that my 1 year old niece had been left at a shelter and within 48 hours, she would be placed in state custody. I immediately booked a flight, brought her home, and started the adoption process. My personal experiences of abuse in the foster care system were not what I wanted for her, so I was determined to give her a better life.
My main priority is to be able to provide the very best life possible for my children and to be a role model for them. I am working very hard to make sure that happens.
MEDICAL PROCEDURES: My dental issues began about a year ago. I was told that my four top molars needed to be replaced with implants, because of broken teeth due to years of cavities and teeth grinding. Unfortunately, an infection eroded the right side of my upper jaw, causing two of the implants to fail. The dentist tried to fix the problem by performing numerous bone grafts and procedures in attempt to save the bone. But, all attempts failed and I was told that I needed to go to a specialist. I began my search for one that I could afford. Last month I had a root canal fail, causing an infection and abscess. Last week, I had two more root canals fail.
For the past four years I have been a fulltime student at Utah State University, graduating with dual degrees in FCHD (Family, Consumer & Human Development) and Health Education and Promotion with an emphasis in Community Health. I just began the Masters of Health Promotion graduate program at USU, Fall 2015. I also work part time at a non- profit organization, providing resources and services to victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault.
WHY DONATE: As a single mom, full time student and part time employee, I do not have dental insurance, nor the means to financially afford the extensive dental work needed, so I am asking for the help of a “village”. I have been working extra shifts whenever possible, and will continue to so that I can also contribute to my expenses. I have a treatment plan outlined and the gofundme funds will be used exclusively to cover the costs of repair work, sinus reconstructive surgery (to fix the eroded bone), and teeth implants.
Through the dedicated help of amazing friends I now have a retainer with teeth to replace those that are missing and have been introduced to an astounding, board certified, well respected oral surgeon. He has reviewed my case and agreed to provide the necessary services at a significantly discounted rate. He has already helped by providing dental care last week to get the process started.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help you are able to offer! I look forward to getting my mouth back into functioning order so that I can focus on doing other good things in this world. THANK YOU!
