Help Sue Make 'Bubba Lou'
Donation protected
Sue Anthony is a very talented actress with Down syndrome, who has been waiting her whole life for her chance to shine....
“Bubba Lou” is a short film about the people who get support, and the people who don't. After 25 years living in a group home, a woman goes looking for her long-lost brother.
The condition she finds him in makes her question what words like 'home' and 'care' really mean...
I met Sue in an acting program for people with disabilities. She had always wanted to act on film, but had never been given the opportunity. The closest she'd come was being cast as an extra in a movie once. I thought she was really talented, and we decided right then and there that we would make a movie together. I designed the simplest movie I could, something that took place in one location, with the smallest possible cast & crew, just to see if we could really pull this off...
And it turns out we could!!
Not only did 'Miriam' get rave reviews, it was picked up by a niche distributor in New York, Sproutflix, to be part of their online catalogue and touring film festival.
So now, we want to create something truly special, not just 'special' like the Olympics. We want to create a visual piece of art that stands on its own, and is not just of note because of somebody's disability.
We have one unique challenge that we are asking for help with....
There's an actor who is absolutely perfect to play Sue's brother, but he needs to undergo a complicated transformation... and he lives on the other side of the country.

This is Tyler Lionel Parr.
He's an accomplished professional actor living in Toronto, ON. He used to live in BC, I've done projects with him before, and he is not only extremely talented, and generously spirited, but he looks more like Sue's brother than any actor I've ever seen...
We need to fly our actor out from Toronto, and hire a highly-skilled make-up artist to help transform him...

We feel like we have an amazing opportunity to bring these two characters together. Very similar, and yet worlds apart, one of them struggling to be 'able' and struggling to live without support, or a home, and the other, defined as 'disabled', with a safety net around her that is both a gift and a prison.

We are already on target to shoot this film in April 2019. We have received $25,000 from the BC Arts Council. That's over 70% of our budget...
Every amount helps, and here are a few ways we can express our gratitude:
