Help Us Ease Liam's Cancer Journey

Liam, my fiancé, is a talented Sydney creative with a heart of gold and a karate enthusiast who kicks life's challenges to the curb. We were in the midst of planning our wedding, excited to build a future together. Then, our life took an unexpected turn.
In December 2023, Liam’s vision in his left eye started going blurry and warped, with colours changed, as if there was a funny Instagram filter on his world. Concerned, he visited his GP, on the day of our family’s Christmas lunch, worrying everyone. That same day, he was referred for an eye exam at Specsavers, who then referred him to Sydney Eye Hospital with a letter marked “SUPER URGENT!” for suspected retinal detachment. The following weeks were a whirlwind of scans: MRIs, retinal scans, ultrasounds, blood tests, x-rays. His case was unique, puzzling even the most experienced doctors.
Finally, on 16th January 2024, a diagnosis: Ocular (Uveal) Melanoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Approximately 200 Australians are diagnosed with ocular melanoma each year. My heart sank. But amidst the fear, there was hope. Liam found a skilled team at Chatswood Eye Specialists and also The Kinghorn Cancer Centre. He's now on a trial medication designed to shrink the tumour and halt any potential spread. Radiation therapy is planned to follow in a few months, aiming to eliminate the cancer forever.

Last year, I faced my own health scare – cervical cancer. Liam was my rock, holding my hand through procedures and fears, even though it meant accepting the possibility of not having children together. Now, the tables have turned. He faces this battle with such strength, grace, and kindness. Liam is a wonderful person, who has been incredibly strong, kind and patient during this incredibly difficult time. He's a loving uncle, brother, son, partner and friend and I hate that this is happening to him.

We’ve both have had to take unpaid leave from work while we navigate dozens of medical appointments and days off to manage side effects of the new medication. We're paying out of pocket for regular procedures such as MRIs and blood tests not covered by Medicare. And now, our rent is going up an extra $70 per week which the real estate said was “not negotiable” despite our pleas.

I would love to be able to plan some nice activities and experiences for the both of us, such as a weekend away in the Blue Mountains, and some other fun events which are doable for us both like going to the movies or the Royal Easter Show.
Every contribution, big or small, would ease the financial burden we are facing and create moments of light during this dark time.
We understand times are tough for many right now, but any amount you can share will make a world of difference. Help us show cancer who's boss, and create beautiful memories in the process.
Please share our story and consider joining Liam's fight. Together, we can make the most out of a difficult time.
