Make Selwyn Smile
Donation protected
UPDATE: Wow - I'm completely brlown away by y'alls generosity. It was such a shock to me (the good kind) to see the $1K goal reached so quickly. Though, maybe I should have expected it because y'all are wonderful and inspiring people.
I've extended the goal to $2K so you can see your progress. All of the contributions will continue to go directly to Selwyn.
Original note:
Dear friends and family,
Meet my incredible former student, Selwyn (not the photo bomber!). I'm hoping you'll consider making a small donation to this remarkable young man, who is currently a junior at Emory University.
In the past ten years, Selwyn's mom and step-dad were both deported to Guatamala, leaving him in the states with his three younger sisters, ages 17, 14, and 11. Selwyn lives at Emory and his sisters live with a guardian outside Atlanta. Emory has assembled a support team for Selwyn and is covering his tuition and housing and providing mental health support. But Selwyn still goes without money for food, toiletries, or a cell phone, borrowing all these from friends as he can.
Selwyn is a problem solver, totally brilliant, scrappy when he needs to be, and kind. I have no doubt that he will survive the next year, after which he will graduate with a degree in Latin American History. But it is so incredibly ridiculous to me that a 21 year old is in this situation - and when I remember that Selwyn is one of many young people in our country facing such challenges, I'm brought to many, many tears.
The only way I can think to balance this out in the universe is for the universe to make Selwyn feel so happy, so surprised, and so loved that he is brought to tears. I want to surprise him with $1000 that he can spend on taking good care of himself however he chooses - by purchasing a nourishing meal, a cell phone, and/or other necessities like toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
Would you help me let this kid know that we're with him all the way by making a small donation? I promise to record the phone call when he realizes what's happened and share his reaction with everyone who partakes.
Peace and love,
Ms. Beck
