Make Me Smile Project at Kirtipur Hospital, Nepal
Cleft lip and/or palate affects 1 in every 600 to 700 births in the UK and worldwide. These conditions can impact eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking.
The occurrence of clefts varies by ethnicity, with the highest incidence among Asians (1 in 500 births), Caucasians (1 in 700 births), and individuals of African descent (1 in 1,200 births).
Reconstructive surgery has made significant advancements, offering hope and immediate transformations for affected children.
MERCY Humanitarian UK (MHUK) is a registered UK charity that aims to provide life-changing surgery for children with cleft lip and/or palate in Kathmandu, Nepal, at Kirtipur Hospital.
Surgery can be financially prohibitive for some families, and our mission is to improve these children's lives, both physically and emotionally, by providing the necessary treatments.
Our project, "Make Me Smile," aims to bring smiles to the faces of cleft lip and palate children, eliminating isolation and rejection, and offering a better future.
MERCY Humanitarian UK (MHUK) is a fully registered non-profit organisation in the UK. In July 2022, we relaunched as MHUK to reflect our focus on humanitrian aid and to reintroduce ourselves to a new audience. To help us achieve this, we work with established UK charities, societies, government agencies, student bodies and local community groups. Our projects include charity collaborations, event partnerships, participation at public gatherings, awareness and fundraising campaigns as well as providing health talks to various support groups.
