We want to share an important -close to our heart- project with you!
Make education possible for the youth of Nieuw Aurora
In the heart of the Surinamese Amazon, the Maroon village of Nieuw Aurora is leading the way to a brighter future for its children. The community is actively working to give young people access to secondary education in their own village, a place where they can learn safely and stay close to their families.
Currently, there are two primary schools: the Johannes Arabieschool with over 200 students and OS Nieuw Aurora with about 120 students. Every day, children from four surrounding villages travel by boat to attend school. Some must cross two rapids in a dugout canoe (korjaal) in the early morning, a journey that is not without risks.
After primary school, there is no opportunity to continue learning in the village. Young people who want to further their education must go to the city. But many are still too young. Life in the city is expensive, unsafe and often emotionally challenging. Many children who go to the city return because there is no proper care or supervision available for them.
To change this, the community of Nieuw Aurora has taken the initiative to establish a new secondary school, allowing young people to continue learning in their own familiar environment, safe close to their families and with the promise of a brighter future.
There used to be a small secondary school for youth in Nieuw Aurora, but the building is outdated and unsuitable. The classrooms are unsafe and not equipped for proper learning.
We support this initiative by raising funds and providing resources. This allows the community to carry out their plan and give young people the opportunities they deserve.
With your support, an entire generation will have the chance for a brighter future.
Join us in bringing secondary education and learning opportunities to the children of Nieuw Aurora.
