Make a Money Pit a Home

I am Keely, my partner and I purchased our first home in 2021, unfortunately, the American Dream became a nightmare. Even though we had an amazing team helping us purchase the home, and a thorough inspection, issues with the home began to arise within weeks of closing and have just snowballed since then.

Since purchasing the home, we have discovered that the previous owner did not properly do permitting on the house, most of the work was completed without any permitting or inspection (and we are not the only ones they have done this to). The permits on the property were also never closed out. Not only are we dealing with issues of failing components on the house, but now the City has discovered the permitting issues and we have to redo/complete things to come into compliance.

Now we are talking not just some small things here and there, we are talking new roof, new siding, all new windows, waterproofing and re-finishing the basement which had flooding, all new floors, exposing and confirming structural components that were never inspected, and permitting an entire third-floor addition that was completed without any permits.

We are working hard with the City, which is trying to be understanding of the situation that we are left in, and we have hired an attorney to seek compensation from the previous owner for their severe negligence. Unfortunately, between attorney fees, and financing work that needed to be completed immediately on the house we have gone from financially stable to hemorrhaging money while costs to move forward with even the simplest work are piling up.

Though we have fought hard to shoulder this burden, we have realized that it is quickly passing beyond our abilities. We are asking for help to make this money pit back into a home and seek justice against the former owner for all his wrongdoings. After two years of struggles and many months to still come, we really just want to be able to live in a safe and stable home.
