Project Galgo are raising money to enable 8 beautiful Bahraini Salukis to come to the UK.

A provisional date of 8th March 2025 has been set for these incredible souls - Julio, Maple, Suri, Camille, Goldwin, Wassim, Asan and River.

There are many we know who question UK rescues helping dogs from overseas. But how can we deny these dogs a chance, their only chance of happiness and liberation from the hell they, through no fault of their own, are thrown into from birth. Have they not experienced enough prejudice already?

Could you turn away seeing them bleeding to death, poisoned, shot and mutilated, beaten and starved, riddled with dysentery, disease and yes... sexually abused by humans.

It is disturbing to read isn't it? But it is reality for hundreds of dogs. And a reality that we can change and have done for many salukis who are now much adored by their families here in the UK.

Salukis were once heralded as 'Gifts from God', and To the Al Murrah, and indeed to all Bedouins, the Saluki had nothing in common with the kalb, the rough watchdog that guarded their tents. Like the ancient Egyptians before them, the Bedouin honoured the saluki as al-hurr, “the noble one,” and poets called it “the prince of swiftness.”

As time went on, these ancient, graceful, sensitive souls fell prey to a changing culture which now views them as less than rubbish and indeed many Salukis in Bahrain live amongst the rubbish in desolate areas. Many have their ears hacked off - for punishment or for fun. They endure all manner of inhumanity - the unthinkable.

It is by the compassion and devotion of human beings like Emtinan Zidany of Rays of Hope - "For Dogs in Bahrain" for being such a guardian angel for so many, the only light and love some of them get to experience. She gives them back their dignity where for so long all they have known is shame and hatred.

Any parent of a Saluki will tell you they possess a magic like no other. Extraordinary characters who enrich the lives of their families. Loyal, aloof, charming, enchanting, deeply sensitive, graceful, elegant, zany, humorous, fascinating, glorious, inquisitive, intelligent are just some of the qualities they possess.

Many airlines do not allow them to travel. We are currently only able to fly them with Emirates who thankfully have not closed the only path left for them to make it out of the country.

We are hoping to raise around 6k - this will not cover all costs but will help enormously with covering some of the transport costs.

More information about Project Galgo: To promote humane behaviour towards animals by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for animals, in particular but not limited to Galgos, Podencos and other Sighthounds, which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals.
