Help Us Break the Cycle of Poverty, One Child at a Time
It is widely known that education has the potential to change lives. Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education reduces poverty, improves health and wellbeing and unlocks a child’s potential. That was most definitely the case for my wife, Fran, and I, and we have personally witnessed the power of a good education in the lives of our sons. Our lives have been very blessed. Now we want to “pay it forward.”
Several months ago, we began a process with the help of a community activist to identify a deserving child from a low-income family for whom we would provide the support for a high-quality education. This support would cover both academic and extra-curricular pursuits, based on our belief that a child’s expanded environment plays a critical role in all aspects of his or her success. The education would be from Kindergarten through high school at a high quality private college preparatory school well recognized for the quality of its education.
In the selection process, we encountered a not unexpected challenge. The need far exceeds our ability to supply it. While we knew this would be the case, it was a heart wrenching process narrowing the deserving candidates down to a single child. With much effort, we narrowed it down to two children and decided to seek the support of others to help us provide both children this life changing opportunity. Working with a school, we happily encountered the opportunity to help a third child as well.
Gianelly is a smart and beautiful four-and-a-half-year-old girl. She comes from immigrant parents who arrived in the United States from Mexico almost 20 years ago. Her father works in construction and her mother is a stay-at-home Mom. Supporting their children and providing them opportunity are very important to her parents. Gianelly enjoys reading, playing outside and coloring. She loves attending a county funded preschool where she has already started to read. She always has a smile on her face and willingness to help others. Her preschool teacher says, “she is a joy to have in class." Gianelly loves life and has a determined “can do” attitude.
Yaneth is 5 years old and will be entering Kindergarten in the fall. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico many years ago in search of a better life for their family. Mom is a stay-at-home mother and dad is a machine operator. Their hope is for their girls to realize greater opportunities through a good education. Yaneth loves singing and dancing and can entertain herself and others for hours. She is a loving child and loves to cuddle with her parents and her sister, Violet. She has been attending a county funded preschool program, loves to read and is excited about entering Kindergarten.
Fran and I have personally committed $60,000 to fund one of these children from Kindergarten through high school. Our goal is to raise another $60,000 for the second child.
If funding can be raised for the two Kindergartners to attend school, the school has generously agreed to fund Yaneth's sister, Violet, as well starting in the Fall resulting in a total of three children receiving this life changing opportunity.
We seek to help these smart, deserving, and hard-working children break the cycle of poverty through educational opportunities. We will take a whole-student approach, awarding tuition scholarships and individualized support services to each of them. From elementary school and continuing through high school, our focus will be on the big picture: helping each child recognize their potential and dreams of higher education, the impact they will make in their communities, and the way that giving back to the world is a privilege we should all strive to earn.
With high quality education, individualized assistance and the support of your donation, our goal is to help these children realize their academic and personal potential, create a new life path for themselves, and then pass it on as they strive to make a difference in their own communities as leaders and role models.
Thank you for your interest in donating to this program! We appreciate your support in making a positive impact on the lives of these children. A donation of any size will make a difference. If you are so inclined, please feel free to share this appeal with others who might be interested in participating.
Donations are tax deductible as charitable donations. We will keep donors informed of the girls’ progress.
