Makayla is a spunky 7year old with Cerebral Palsy, spastic dipelgia, she was born at 24 weeks weighing just 1lb 4oz at birth. Makayla has a shunt and has had 25 surgeries in her short 7years of life. Makayla is very determined and she dreams of running and playing with her brothers, sisters and friends. In November of 2022 Makayla had surgery on her legs to lengthen her hamstrings and bilateral adductor tenotomies. Makayla trialed Bioness in November of 2022 before her surgery. Bioness is a wireless compact functional electrical stimulation (FES) system that stimulates the nerves in the lower leg, activating muscles to lift the foot. Makayla LOVED the Bioness but despite all the awesome letters of recommendation from her doctors and PTs our insurance company is denying claiming it’s “not medically necessary”. Bioness will help give Makayla the ability to be as independent as she can be. Bioness will also allow her to run and play with other children and not require her to wear the thick bulky plastic braces that bother her legs and feet so much! The Bioness L300 device is $5,530per device , and Makayla needs one for each leg. We have been able to get some funding but still need to come up with $8,000 for both devices. I’ve put off making a go-fund me as I don’t like asking for help but after talking with our doctors, friends, family and therapists we are hopeful this may help Makayla’s medical needs.
