Makaiya is a fun-loving, energetic 13-year-old that loves riding horses, volleyball, hiking, and music. She was diagnosed with idopathic adolescent scoliosis when she was 10 (the summer before going into middle school). For the first year of treatment, she wore a Boston Brace for 23 hours a day (not fun for an active 6th grader)! Since that time, she has grown quite a bit, which means that she is on her 4th brace (each costing $2,500). Despite the bracing, she currently has a thoracic curve of 60 degrees and a lumbar curve of 38 degrees.
We found that she is a candidate for anterior scoliosis correction, which will allow her to maintain her flexibility and be able to go back to the activities she loves - but it comes with large medical bills. Her surgery is scheduled in June and we owe an amount upfront as well as additional bills after the surgery has been performed. We are trying to raise money to cover what the insurance will not. Any assistance is deeply appreciated!
