Major's Medical Care & Sudden Loss to Cancer

I’ve set up this page to honor the beautiful life of Major Mooney and to hopefully give back some of the love he gave to so many people.

If you met Major you knew one thing for sure: he was always smiling. He lived every day to the fullest. He was the silliest and kindest chocolate lab who loved being a dog and loved living at the beach. Nothing brought him more joy than swimming in the ocean.

When that spirit suddenly dwindled this past week, Major was immediately taken to his vet. It was clear he was in pain and having difficulty walking. When medication failed to help, Major was rushed to the Emergency Vet the very next night. Still no diagnosis and with his condition continuing to aggressively decline, he was rushed to the Charleston Veterinary Hospital on August 6th. Major had suddenly began to experience full paralysis in his back legs and was no longer able to walk stand or function on his own. It was necessary for him to spend day and night at the hospital, have 24 hour care, undergo X-Rays, an MRI and a CT scan while being extensively evaluated by veterinarians, neurologists, oncologists and radiologists.

The devastating news came that an aggressive tumor was causing severe spinal cord compression. Major was diagnosed with cancer at only 9 years old and it had stolen his ability to do all the things he loved most.

After spending 4 days and 3 nights at the emergency vet, Major was brought home to be with his family in Wilmington. He was deeply cared for day and night to help bring him comfort and peace in his last few days. Then on Friday, August 11th, it was time to set him free. He was brought to the beach for the very last time and still had that big bright smile on his face.

His family is devastated and grieving over the sudden loss of their sweet boy. I am hoping any amount that we can contribute will help lighten the load of the trauma and loss they have faced this past week. Due to the severity of his condition and the difficulty of determining his diagnosis, I would like to ask for help in relieving the financial burden for Major's Family.

Major’s momma, Kristen Mooney, wanted me to share the below quote:

“I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you; but instead I am deeply honored knowing you spent the rest of your life with me.” –Camille Marcotte
