SCM is helping this family raise funds to help pay for the enormous medical expenses that have been incurred and that are still to come as Majed recovers from his horrendous accident.
Help Majed Loqqata (Lukatah) on His Journey to Recovery
Majed Loqqata’s (Lukatah) story is one of resilience, hope, and unfulfilled dreams. At just 25-years-old, Majed had a vibrant life in East Jerusalem, Palestine, working as a full-time chef, while also being an avid boxer and a talented piano player. His dreams were big–he aspired to become an MMA fighter and a model, passions that filled him with purpose and drive. Now, after a devastating jet ski accident that left him with severe traumatic brain injuries, Majed is fighting for his life and for a chance to return to the things he loves most.
Majed came to Seattle, WA on July 11, 2024, for the first time to visit family and enjoy summer. Tragically, on August 4, 2024, Majed was involved in a severe jet ski accident on Lake Washington that changed his life forever. He lost consciousness in the water due to a jolt to the head and was rescued by his brothers before being rushed to Harborview Medical Center. Majed spent 20 days in a coma in the Neuro ICU, where his family was told that his chances of survival were slim due to the extent of his traumatic brain injuries (multi-compartmental traumatic brain injury with subdural hematoma, epidural hematoma, contusions and intraparenchymal hemorrhage as well as facial fractures and an open metacarpal fracture). Despite the grim prognosis, his family never lost hope, and miraculously, Majed woke up from his coma.
Since then, Majed has endured multiple surgeries, including a craniectomy, cranioplasty, gastrostomy and surgical repair for facial and hand fractures. Though he is now medically stable, Majed is still battling the effects of his injuries—he remains paralyzed on his left side, unable to speak, walk, eat or make decisions on his own. After 60 days in the hospital, Harborview Medical Center wants to discharge Majed to his family because he is ready for specialized care in a rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery. Even though Majed had travel insurance, we were surprised to find that the policy specifically excluded coverage for water activities and unfortunately, as a visitor on a tourist visa, Majed does not qualify for health insurance or benefits in the USA, and the cost of care is overwhelming. The cost of rehabilitation alone ranges from $28,000 to $40,000 per month and Majed needs long-term care anywhere from 6-12 months, depending on how he responds to care.
Majed had a return flight to Palestine booked for August 22, 2024, but now he needs to stay in Washington to continue his fight for recovery. By contributing, sharing Majed’s story, or offering resources, you can play a part in his journey toward healing and help him reclaim his future. Every bit of support gets Majed one step closer to regaining his independence and making his dreams come true. With your help we can give Majed the fighting chance he deserves.
