Maizie's Medical Journey

On May 9, 2022, Maizie Jo Skerratt, Michael & Brittany Skerratt's third beautiful girl joined our world and we couldn't have been more excited!

After a whirlwind 24 hrs, Maizie & parents were in Grand Rapids at Devos Children's Hospital where Maizie was diagnosed with Hirschprung's Disease which affects the colon. Her first surgery, to remove the non-functioning area of the colon, was done on May 17th, at 8 days old. Within a few days of this procedure, Mom & Dad & doctors began to notice her healing process had taken a wrong turn. A complication that took them down a year-long road with 3 additional surgeries.

Maizie’s “last” surgery was a couple of weeks ago - just a day after her 1st birthday.

Everything was going fine until it wasn’t.

Her complication-same as the very first surgery- came back again. Which brought with it heartache, frustration and confusion for Mom & Dad.

Maizie's surgeon down at Devos confirmed the same complication and told Mom & Dad this was beyond his abilities to repair. He pointed them in the direction of a new surgeon and had them explore their options which would send them out of state and to one of the following -

Columbus, OH - Cincinnati, OH - Seattle, WA - or Boston, MA.

Last week they met with the chief of surgeons at Columbus Nationwide Hospital. This Dr. and his team are very familiar with these repairs and the process ahead of them and have experience with Hirschprung's patients.

The Dr. confirmed that Maizie will need to have 3 more surgeries - the same 3 as before.

He is hopeful the entire process will be completed by the end of this year.

Maizie's ileostomy surgery (the first of the 3) will happen next week.

Knowing they would never ask for help or set one up for themselves, some of the family decided to do it for them.

Maizie's new adventure will require multiple trips to Columbus (a 7 hr drive one way) as well as more nights away from the older girls. With this GoFundMe we are hoping to help offset travel expenses, help with any needs for the older girls while they're away from Mom & Dad and help give peace of mind to the family.
