Maizey’s journey to recovery

Hello for those of you who don’t know our Maizey girl, she is a 6 year old female pit bull. This journey that has lead us to where we are right now, started back  November 15th when we had a horrible wind storm and our side door slammed on her left shoulder causing trauma to her left rib cage, immediately after she started showing bruising and about 2-3 weeks later she started to have swelling/hematoma appear where the door had hit her. And although it was visually disturbing to look at she was still fully functional! We had spoke to multiple professionals and as long as she was not symptomatic or struggling, the best course of treatment was to closely monitor her. She was still physically able to play with our other dogs and go for walks, but the swelling/hematoma was not going away. 6 months later it still had not resolved and at this point trying to be a responsible pet owner we felt that the need to have it assessed by a professional in person to see if they were able to remove any blood or fluid from her side. We took her to get checked out as she was not showing any signs of improvement and during this time, they attempted to do a needle aspiration and the site began to swell so they withdrew the procedure and gave her antibiotics. That evening She ended up with bruising on her chest under the hematoma down to her nipples and then the  mass began to grow and then she become symptomatic. She was fine and functioning up until they tried to aspirate, it just wasn’t going away and we wanted to make sure it wasn’t causing her any harm. Fast  forward those two weeks she was on these antibiotics and she began to rapidly get worse, and seemed to be in too much pain, and was super weak, she was not eating or drinking at this time and barely had energy to get up, or even do her normal every day activities. We tried getting her stronger to take her to get examined again, but still she was showing no signs of improvement and was in severely dire conditions. We decided it was time to put her to rest, we had family come say what we thought would be their final good byes and tried to keep her as comfortable as we could, she was struggling more and more each day, and had nothing left in her, she spent her days sleeping and rarely moving or wanting to get up, as we had scheduled a in home euthanasia through Lap of Love to have them come put her to rest in the comfort of her own home, and were giving payment over the phone for the first time in over 5 days she got up and started walking around, drinking water and even began to eat. She started showing signs that she was not ready to give up, so we had to continue fighting for her! We then canceled this appointment to have them come to our home to put her down, and immediately drove to a highly recommended animal hospital, she was in fairly poor conditions but still fighting with what little she had left. The vet had let us low she was not doing very well, her temperature was extreme high, she had very little blood in her body (half of what she should have), they decided to keep her over night to do X-rays and a cat scan and to start her on IV fluids and antibiotics to strengthen her.  After two days of being there she finally got a CT and we had to wait 24 hours for her results to come back. When we finally got the results we were told it looked like a hematoma without ruling out an abscess. We decided that surgery was the best thing we could do as that was what they recommended and they scheduled it for two days later, in these days leading up to surgery she had several blood transfusions as her blood levels were only half of what they should have been, and they continued IV fluids and antibiotics. Her surgery came, and we got some news from be doctor we didn’t expect, he had gotten as much of the mass as he could and anything around that wasn’t supposed to be there, but did mention he could not rule out that It was not cancer, he had never seen anything like this and was sending it out to pathology and to have biopsies done along with lab testing with what he had found during surgery. She has had some good and bad days, and is still in the hospital continuing to get stronger and fighting with everything she has! Me and my younger sister are starting this Go Fund Me for my parents as the vet bills are continuing to go up as she has now been there for a week, and even after her returning home, she will have several check ups and have to have her drain removed, along with all the medications! We ask that even if you are unable to donate at this time you please share her story in hopes to have as many people cheering her on as possible. If you also can not donate we ask that you please pray for our sweet girl in these troubling times, she’s so very strong and is continuing to fight! #MaizeyStrong
