Maizel's Medical Costs
Donation protected
Hi, our names are Melissa and Richard and we are fundraising for Maizels medical bills. She is a 3 year old Australian Shepherd and Golden Retriever mix. This is her story... On Friday March 22nd, Maizel woke up and refused to eat and she was also showing signs of lethargy. I promptly called our local vet and got her in at 11:00am. The vet wasn't sure what was causing this but she recommended some x-rays to see if she had eaten something she shouldn't have and fluids to rehydrate her. The x-rays did not show any foreign objects but did show that she was a little constipated. Maizel stayed there getting fluids until about 5:30pm which was when we picked her up and they sent her home with some antibiotics, laxative, and omeprazole.
Saturday she looked like she was getting better. She was eating and moving around a little better so we thought she was on the mend. Sunday rolled around and she was acting okay in the morning but by the afternoon she was declining. We rushed her to one of the emergency vets in town and they told us she had a 105.8 temperature which is pretty close to deadly. They took her overnight redoing the x-rays, putting her on fluids and IV antibiotics. I called at 9am to see how she was doing and the vet said she had given her a pain shot in the middle of the night to bring down her fever so she wanted to keep her a bit longer to make sure her fever hadn't just gone down because of the pain meds. I called back a few hours later and the vet said she was comfortable with me taking her home. When I got there to pick her up they told me that she had pancreatitis and sent me home with new food, anti-nausea pills and another antibiotic.
Tuesday and Wednesday I saw significant changes and thought she was really getting better. Then we got to Wednesday night and she had an instance of urine and bowel incontinences which was very unlike her so I decided I would take her back to the vet in the morning. When Thursday morning rolled around she would not eat her breakfast so I called the first vet I had taken her to and they got me in at 11:00am. She told me that her fever was back to 105.9 and that I needed to take her back to the ER vet. I called the ER vet I had taken her to on Sunday and they told me she needed to go somewhere that had an ultrasound machine to look at her pancreas.
When we got to the vet we went over her story and did her vitals again which now her temperature was over 106 degrees. This new doctor did not think it was pancreatitis. But she also was not sure what was wrong with her. She left with Maizel for a bit and came back and told me she saw a shadow on her previous chest x-ray (which had not been mentioned to me previously) and was also getting pitted edema in her back legs but did not know the cause for this either. I put down the deposit and left her there around 4:30pm Thursday.
I got a call from the vet at 11:30pm Thursday night and they told me she was doing okay... They had done the first ultrasound and noticed something might be wrong with her kidneys but wanted the specialist team to look at it in the morning. So here I am Friday morning waiting for a call from the specialist team.
So far we have spent over $7,000 on Maizel's medical bills which is much more than we have and should have spent. We don't even have a diagnosis yet and I am afraid that if she needs to stay any longer at this new vet that we will not be able to pay and we might have to think about putting her down which honestly I cannot even think about right now. I will keep you all updated the more that I know.
Any donation will go to Maizel's current and possibly future medical bills. If you cannot donate please feel free to share this in hopes to get more of a word out. Thank you so much for reading and please know that any little bit helps and we are so grateful and thankful for everyone!!!
