My name is Maiya Douglas and I am a junior at Impact Academy of Arts and Technology in Hayward, California. I would like to double major in zoology and photography because my dream job is to be a wildlife photographer for National Geographic.
My school and Global Glimpse have offered me the opportunity to go on a 2 and 1/2 week trip to Esteli, Nicaragua a small town near Matagalpa. I am interested in Global Glimpse because I love to travel, I love volunteering, helping people less fortunate than me, and I love learning about different cultures. I am excited to meet new people and experience the culture in Nicaragua. I hope Global Glimpse will help me relate to people more and that I will be able to inspire someone while on my trip.
While in Nicaragua, I will experience what is like to be a student, work as a local and live on $1 a day. I will also be involve in tutoring an English learner.
Any $5, $10, $25 or more donation would be greatly appreciated. In appreciation for your donations, I will send you a picture from my trip and a note sharing my experience. If I raise more than my goal, I will donate the rest to other Global Glimpse students at my school.
Thank you,
Maiya
About Global Glimpse (www.globalglipmse.org)
Global Glimpse brings young leaders from diverse backgrounds together on an even playing field. Through the Global Glimpse program students learn how to collaborate to tackle challenges and build powerful relationships. Each Global Glimpse delegation is made up of 20-25 students who represent diverse high schools, neighborhoods, experiences, ethnicity, religious beliefs, socioeconomic backgrounds, and leadership styles.
Trips are structured around academic themes to help students critically think about the complexities of a developing country and explore the Essential Guiding Question: How can I think and act like a responsible global citizen?
CULTURE
The purpose of this theme is for the students to reflect on how culture shapes the way people live and why it is important to preserve local culture and the challenges and importance of doing so in a globalized world.
HISTORY
The purpose of this theme is for the students to explore how history affects a country, its people, and the country’s relationship with other countries.
EDUCATION
The purpose of this theme is for the students to explore the relationship between poverty, development and education and identify the barriers to providing quality education in a developing country.
POVERTY
The purpose of this theme is for the students to see and feel the impact that poverty has on a place and its people and have the opportunity to explore ways to break the cycle of poverty using the framework of the 5Ps (People, place, politics, past, peace).
POLITICS
The purpose of this theme is for the students to learn about the challenges of governing a country with low resources, lack of education, lack of infrastructure, corruption and dependence on foreign aid. Students will explore how politics affects all of the other themes.
GLOBAL BUSINESS
The purpose of this theme is for the students to learn how businesses can impact the development of impoverished countries and the importance of sustainable business practices in a globalized economy.
AID AND DEVELOPMENT
The purpose of this theme is for the students to gain insight into the challenges of creating and managing a sustainable aid project. Students will explore different projects and organizations and discuss how aid can have both a positive and negative impact on a country.
