On Feb. 8th, our mother Mai Pa Lee experienced a severe headache and was taken by ambulance in the middle of the night to the hospital. Mai Pa suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, requiring doctors to perform emergency brain surgery. In order to reduce swelling and remove the blood clot, which was the size of a golf ball, the doctors removed a portion of her skull. While surgery went smoothly, Mai Pa remained in a coma post-operation and was transferred to a long-term care facility. After a month of being in a coma-state, Mai Pa finally reemerged and regained consciousness.
Currently, Mai Pa is experiencing a great deal of pain as she is unable to eat, speak and move. She requires 24/7 care and observation in order to continue with daily life. Though the effects of the brain hemorrhage are unclear, this complication will impact her future enjoyment with loved ones. Mai Pa’s road to recovery will be long, requiring extensive speech and physical therapy, future surgeries to replace the missing skull piece, as well as medical support in order to resume normal life.
Those who have been fortunate to know Mai Pa knows that she is one of the most loving, caring, and selfless individuals. Her dedication to her family and grandchildren is remarkable and immeasurable. Upon first gaining consciousness, she mouthed her son’s name wondering who was taking care of him (her son Va is a paraplegic who she was the sole caretaker for).
