Our dear friend Mahmood passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2024. He was a fighter with an unwavering spirit who fought through a major motorcycle accident and beat cancer with a smile on his face, only for life to take an unexpected turn and take him away far too soon.
Mahmood was a distinguished alumnus of the University of Michigan, where he earned his PhD in electrical engineering in 2017. He was curious, creative, and passionate about his research and mentoring younger students. But Ann Arbor wasn’t just where he worked; it was his second home. He enjoyed strolling around campus and going to every little bookstore or gift shop around downtown. He loved going to Sweetwaters and Espresso Royale to work or read, and he would always bring his friends together to go out and get late night pizza at Pizza House. Beyond the time he spent with friends, he was committed to fostering a sense of community and an inclusive environment for students. He was the president of the Iranian Graduate Student Association for three years, during which he organized countless events to promote Iranian culture and encourage cross-cultural exchange and understanding on campus.
Even though his time was cut short, his impact on his friends and family continues to be felt today. He lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives with his kindness and support. He found joy in small things, and with his humor he reminded us not to take life too seriously. It didn’t matter if you were having a rough day or if the conversation was serious; he would lighten the mood with his funny observations and infectious laughter.
In honor of his passion for education and helping others, and his love for U of M, we are establishing the Mahmood Barangi Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded to engineering students who exemplify the same passion for learning. Any contribution is highly appreciated and will help to keep his legacy alive through future generations of scholars.
