Thank you for your time to be here and for the love and support you show our family.
I will be including the full story as well for those that would like the details. The short story is our beloved father, husband, grandfather and friend may be on the edge of going home to meet our Lord and Savior. Gerry and his wife, Cindy, need all of the love and support they can get, including monetarily.
They are still trying to pay off $5,500 worth of medical/doctor bills and catch up from Gerry's unfortunate DKA trip to the hospital last June when we almost lost him the first time. On top of these bills they just closed on the purchase of their lovely home of which, $1,800, the first mortgage payment is due next month. They will also have the bills from this hospital stay to come as well.
This whole event has been terrifying, difficult and painful. The least of these worries should be their finances and we all can help with that. Please contact me should you wish to reach out to the family, send gifts or visit Gerry. Which I cannot guarantee will happen but we understand the desire to say goodbye.
Here is the email address to contact [email redacted].
Here is the story with some scary details that may not be comfortable for everyone to read, please be aware of your needs as you read our story.
On the morning of Wednesday, February 19th, our beloved Gerry had a severe heart attack. His dear wife, Cindy, took amazing care of him while on the phone with emergency services she started CPR on her husband. Something I can't fathom having to go through. Emergency services arrived and continued CPR and defibrillation electrical shocks. For almost an hour his heart was in v-fib. They had almost given up when his heart showed a little bit of response to the treatment and they transported him to the hospital. At this point they had him hooked up to a LUCAS machine which kept his blood pumping with continuous CPR. This unfortunately also caused significant damage to his ribs and chest, crushing multiple ribs.
After being in the hospital on full life support for the last 30 hrs, here is what we know. The largest artery in his heart had a complete blockage and that is what caused his heart attack and the damage to the valves in his heart. They are telling us his heart is at 1/3 functionality and that this is likely permanent. They've placed a pump in his heart to help it function but it still isn't supporting his body as much as the doctors would like to see. They have given him a 20-30% chance of survival. Which is such a hard pill to swallow and we are all riding on the hope that he will pull through.
I'll keep this page updated as we know more. The next 24hrs are crucial in seeing how his heart and body can function with this pump and if they can try to take him off any of his life support machines.
Any donations are helpful, including money, shares, kind words, prayers and love.
Thank you,
The Mahar Family
