'Magpie' - A Short Film

Donation protected
Magpie is an emotionally driven drama that explores the destroying grief among two siblings, and how the death of their father has led both to channel this grief in different ways. Set against the scenic Fermanagh landscape, the film follows our protagonists, Eabha, and Eoin, on their journey to Eabha’s end of year Father-Daughter dance. Eabha channels her grief into the hope that her father may show her a sign he is with her, while Eoin struggles with his newfound responsibility as Eabha’s father figure. Their journey explores grief, sibling relations, and the idea of growing up when faced with a life-changing death.

Why this story?
Our film aims to delve into the complex ways in which people cope with grief and the death of a loved one, especially a father figure. Through the lens of siblings bonding together after the death of their dad, the film will explore how familial bonds are tested, strengthened, or strained by loss. The key narrative will revolve around shared memories, conflicting emotions, and how different siblings reconcile their grief while maintaining their connection to each other.

Magpies, often symbolic of duality, represent both life and death, joy, and sorrow, making them a powerful motif in the story. To some, magpies are often seen as messengers from spirits, bringing news from the dead, symbolising the sibling's attempts to communicate with their late father.

Our aim
As student filmmakers, we have collectively decided that crowdfunding is the best decision to bring our creative visions to life.

We aim to start production at the beginning of 2025 where we will be filming across Northern Ireland, specifically Belfast and Fermanagh.

This will ensure we can produce a high-quality film that accurately depicts our vision and intentions. Your support, no matter the amount, brings us collectively one step closer to bringing this story to life.

The money raised will be used in the following areas:

  • Ensuring cast are paid.
  • Travel and food expenses.
  • AccessNI checks as we will be working with a child.
  • Costumes and props.
  • Film Festivals.
  • Securing safe locations.
