This is Mike, he is the love of my life and one of the kindest, most loving people I have ever met. Mike is caring and generous, he always has a kind word or helping hand, whenever the need arises. That may not sound very special to you, except that Mike suffers from a disease called Lymphastatic Elephantiasis. It is a disease of his Lymphatic system that has no treatment and will never get better, only worse. It makes walking almost impossible. He can get around the house in short stretches, but can't walk even room-to-room without resting his legs. Mike would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you were cold. Mike's attitude..."make the best of it, someone always has it worse than you."
In his life Mike has been many things, my favorite? He was a comedian and a magician. He still loves to make people smile with a joke or balloon animals for the little ones. In fact, he looks so much like Santa Claus the kids love to be his best friend!
Try as we might, Mike's condition gets a little worse each year. His handicapped van has finally quit working altogether and the cost to replace it, plus the necessary modifications for him to be able to drive it are, well and truly, out of our reach.
I am still running my own company, working tech support during tax season and taking care of the both of us the best I am able and things are good. Money is not. I am making enough to get us by, but there is just never quite enough for the extras he needs.
He has been solely dependent on his mobility scooter, to leave the house, for some time now. Currently, that to needs repairs that we simply can't afford. His insurance just doesn't cover these expenses.
Without help, Mike will soon be completely home-bound and if you have met him, you know his amazing spirit and insatiable lust for life would wither and die if that happened. I have to find a way, hopefully with your help, to keep him mobile and allow him the freedom to roam.
Thank you,
Wendy
