Broken Pelvis Reconstruction for Magic Man
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Sam Motta. I live out in Carthage, NC in an area that is known for having dumped dogs in the neighborhood. I first noticed Magic Man (this is his nickname as we haven’t thought of a name and the story will explain more into it) when our neighbors let him roam the neighborhood with no supervision and barely any food or basic necessities.
The neighbors eventually moved and left him in the area with no one to care for him. He used to come by my house to be fed but would never stay long or let me keep him inside. A free spirit.
He disappeared for a little while, not making any appearances as much as he did before. But when he came back, he had a really bad limp and what looked to be a broken leg. I tried to keep him on my porch tied up and within 30 minutes had snapped the leash in half. This dog has some strength.
The next time I saw him was Labor Day weekend and I got him on our back porch balcony for the night. In the morning, he was gone. This dog with a serious injury had jumped off my second story balcony.
Needless to say, I decided that if I saw him again I wouldn’t be trying to contain him without a secure system.
Fast forward to yesterday, December 29th, I woke up and my dogs got excited when they went outside because this sweet boy had made his way back to me. I snuck him some Benadryl and carried him to the truck and went straight to the vet.
So. Bad news is that he is heartworm positive, has a broken pelvis, etc. For right now we are going to treat the heart worms and hope for the best. But the surgery is really what we need help with.
An FHO, from what I could gather, is the process of shortening the bone where it is shattered, and letting the fibrous muscle repair the area. I’m sure there is a better way to explain it, but that’s all I’ve got for now. He will be able to use the leg, but he will have a limp forever. Amputation might not be an option for him since he is a bigger dog, but I will update with recommendations from the surgeon once my vet consults them.
He is such a sweet boy and deserves so much better than what he’s had to suffer through. At least 6 months of a broken pelvis could not have been a good time.
He is adjusting well to living in my basement and I have some help from Jade and others, but I hope you can help us too! Anything is greatly appreciated.
Attached are some photos of his X-ray, the little white dot on the right side of the photo is a BB pellet. Left side of the photo is what the right side should look like.
He is good with my dogs, both cats, and even strangers.
