Maggie Goes to Moscow

Hello All,

It's Maggie McGowan here. Here's my story....so far !

25 years ago I was diagnosed with MS and for a good number of years I was well enough that apart from immediate family nobody was aware that I had a serious health issue. Initially my symptoms were numbness and optic neuritis which cleared after a few months. A few years later I lost control of my left leg and suffered with fatigue neither of which I have ever totally recovered from. This resulted in me no longer being able to work full-time. Luckily during this time I was blessed with two beautiful young daughters who are now 14 and 15 years but I find that the symptoms of this disease are stopping me making the most of our time together and I had hoped that my condition wouldn't deteriorate.

Unfortunately in more recent times I have entered into the progressive stages of the disease resulting in walking becoming a major issue and constant fatigue impacting on my day-to-day life. There is very little available in Ireland other than symptom relief for secondary progressive MS. Having researched a revolutionary treatment which is becoming known all over the world for halting the progression of the disease, I have applied and been accepted for a stem-cell transplant in a hospital in Moscow. This hospital is one of the leading facilities in the world for this treatment with very impressive results. The procedure is known as AHSCT and information about it can be found at https://hsct-russia.com

This procedure aims to re-set the faulty immune system. Haematopoietic stem cells are taken from your bone marrow or blood before your immune system is wiped out with chemotherapy. The stem cells are then reintroduced, where they grow a new immune system that no longer attacks the nervous system. My admission date is September 2021!!!!

I would of course have loved to be able to fund this myself but although I can go some way to meeting the cost I would appreciate any help that my friends can give me, either by way of donation or sharing this link.

I hope that this treatment will help to halt the progression of the disease and allow me to enjoy a healthy and independent life going forward with my family.

The estimated total cost is €60,000. My hope is to try and raise €40,000 which will help pay for my treatment and hospitalisation for about a month in Moscow, travel and hotel costs for my stay while getting tests done before treatment and finally the cost of a 3 month recovery programme when I return home.

Myself and my family are asking for your support in achieving this goal by contributing through this 'Gofundme' page. We are so grateful for any support that you can give. We cannot thank you enough for your help.

Warmest regards,
