In their very first year competing in this creative problem-solving competition, the 3rd-5th grade team at Magellan Charter School advanced from Regionals to State, and has now won the honor of advancing to the WORLD FINALS!!!
Odyssey of the Mind is an international team-based creative problem-solving competition that engages students in their learning by allowing their knowledge and ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. Teams solve on-the-spot problems and tackle a single long-term problem. Months of scriptwriting, set building, and rehearsals culminate in an eight-minute performance. Problems naturally lend themselves to a STEM and Art focus also requiring a dramatic presentation. Students bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Teams from almost every state & 25 other countries participate in the program.
This highest level of competition takes place in late May at Iowa State University, with teams from around the globe. The kids are thrilled to represent their school and their state!
Going to the World Finals is an honor this team shares with their community. Approximately 20,000 students, teachers, parents, and volunteers from various states and countries will come together to solve problems creatively. Our children will meet people from diverse economic backgrounds, learn to communicate and make connections with people from varying cultures and be exposed to creative problem-solving skills & methods that they will bring home to share.
However, we estimate that the total cost for the team to attend will be around $20,000 (taking into account travel, lodging, and getting all of our props and costumes to Ames, Iowa). We hope to raise at least half of that amount. We truly appreciate any help you can provide!
