This is my friend Magda. Behind this radiant smile, lurks a terrible invisible illness. Magda suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). CFS/ME is a long-term condition which affects different parts of the body. The most common symptoms are extreme fatigue and excruciating muscle and joint pain. The cause of ME/CFS is unknown. ME/CFS can affect anyone, including children.

Living with ME/CFS is difficult. Extreme fatigue and other physical symptoms make it hard for patients to carry out everyday activities. They often have to make major lifestyle changes excluding them from a normal social and professional life and becoming bedridden. ME/CFS also affects patients’ mental and emotional health, and have a negative effect on their self-esteem.

Apart from extreme fatigue, Magda also suffers amongst others from severe body pains, muscle and joint inflammation, food intolerances/allergies, brain fog, cognitive impairment, post exertional malaise. Lyme and COVID infections have unfortunately worsened her symptoms.

Due to her illness, Magda is unable to work. Because the illness is only partially recognized here in Belgium, she has very little financial aid and struggles financially on a daily basis. Treatments are often not reimbursed and she needs to pay them out of pocket.

Her quality of life is not improving and this has left her at often times, quite desperate… There is hope of a new treatment that could improve her life quality. Sadly, the health insurance doesn't cover the expenses.

The treatment consists of both a glutathion infusion and a mitochondrial infusion. The latter comprises thiamine, nicotinamide, dexpanthenol, pyridoxine, riboflavine and hydroxocobalamine. The infusions are administered on a weekly basis during ten consecutive weeks followed by a month's break and a new blood check up. This process is being repeated until the phase is reached of a monthly recurring maintenance infusion. One infusion costs 110 euro and the blood test costs ca. 190 euro. Voici mon amie Magda. Derrière ce sourire radieux se cache une terrible maladie invisible. Magda souffre du syndrome de fatigue chronique (SFC) ou d'encéphalomyélite myalgique (EM). Le SFC/EM est une affection chronique qui affecte différentes parties du corps. Les symptômes les plus courants sont une fatigue extrême et d'atroces douleurs musculaires et articulaires. La cause de l'EM/SFC est inconnue. L'EM/SFC peut toucher n'importe qui, y compris les enfants.

Vivre avec l'EM/SFC est difficile. Une fatigue extrême et d'autres symptômes physiques empêchent les patients d'effectuer leurs activités quotidiennes. Ils doivent souvent modifier radicalement leur mode de vie, les excluant d'une vie sociale et professionnelle normale et les obligeant à rester alités. L'EM/SFC affecte également la santé mentale et émotionnelle des patients et a un impact négatif sur leur estime de soi.

Outre une fatigue extrême, Magda souffre également de douleurs corporelles intenses, d'inflammations musculaires et articulaires, d'intolérances/allergies alimentaires, de confusion mentale, de troubles cognitifs et de malaises post-effort. La maladie de Lyme et les infections à la COVID-19 ont malheureusement aggravé ses symptômes. En raison de sa maladie, Magda est incapable de travailler. Sa maladie n'étant que partiellement reconnue en Belgique, elle bénéficie de très peu d'aides financières et lutte quotidiennement pour subvenir à ses besoins. Les traitements ne sont souvent pas remboursés et elle doit les payer de sa poche.

Sa qualité de vie ne s'améliore pas, ce qui la laisse souvent désespérée… Un nouveau traitement pourrait améliorer sa qualité de vie. Malheureusement, la mutuelle ne prend pas en charge les frais.

Le traitement comprend une perfusion de glutathion et une perfusion mitochondriale. Cette dernière contient de la thiamine, de la nicotinamide, du dexpanthénol, de la pyridoxine, de la riboflavine et de l'hydroxocobalamine. Les perfusions sont administrées chaque semaine pendant dix semaines consécutives, suivies d'une pause d'un mois et d'une nouvelle prise de sang. Ce processus est répété jusqu'à atteindre la phase de perfusion d'entretien mensuelle. Une perfusion coûte 110 euros et la prise de sang environ 190 euros. Dit is mijn vriendin Magda. Achter haar stralende glimlach schuilt een vreselijke, onzichtbare ziekte. Magda lijdt aan het Chronisch Vermoeidheidssyndroom (CVS) of Myalgische Encefalomyelitis (ME). ME/CVS is een chronische aandoening die verschillende delen van het lichaam aantast. De meest voorkomende symptomen zijn extreme vermoeidheid en hevige spier- en gewrichtspijn. De oorzaak van ME/CVS is onbekend. ME/CVS kan iedereen treffen, ook kinderen.

Leven met ME/CVS is moeilijk. Extreme vermoeidheid en andere lichamelijke klachten maken het voor patiënten moeilijk om dagelijkse activiteiten uit te voeren. Ze moeten vaak grote veranderingen in hun levensstijl doorvoeren, waardoor ze uitgesloten worden van een normaal sociaal en professioneel leven en bedlegerig worden. ME/CVS heeft ook invloed op de mentale en emotionele gezondheid van patiënten en heeft een negatief effect op hun zelfvertrouwen.

Naast extreme vermoeidheid heeft Magda onder andere ook last van hevige lichaamspijnen, spier- en gewrichtsontstekingen, voedselintoleranties/allergieën, hersenmist, cognitieve stoornissen en postinspanningsmalaise. Lyme- en COVID-infecties hebben haar symptomen helaas verergerd. Door haar ziekte kan Magda niet werken. Omdat de ziekte hier in België slechts gedeeltelijk erkend wordt, heeft ze nauwelijks financiële ondersteuning en worstelt ze dagelijks met haar financiën. Behandelingen worden vaak niet vergoed en ze moet ze zelf betalen.

Haar levenskwaliteit verbetert niet en dit heeft haar vaak wanhopig gemaakt... Er is hoop op een nieuwe behandeling die haar levenskwaliteit zou kunnen verbeteren. Helaas dekt de ziektekostenverzekering de kosten niet.

De behandeling bestaat uit zowel een glutathioninfuus als een mitochondriaal infuus. Dit laatste infuus bevat thiamine, nicotinamide, dexpanthenol, pyridoxine, riboflavine en hydroxocobalamine. De infusen worden wekelijks toegediend gedurende tien opeenvolgende weken, gevolgd door een pauze van een maand en een nieuwe bloedcontrole. Dit proces wordt herhaald totdat de fase van een maandelijks terugkerend onderhoudsinfuus is bereikt. Eén infuus kost 110 euro en de bloedtest kost ongeveer 190 euro.
