Help us raise money to cover Maeris’ medical bills from her battle with breast cancer!
Maeris Simkins is the most generous, thoughtful, and selfless person that I know. As one of her best friends she has served me countless times! She has always been the first to offer help and the last to ask for help so I'm asking for your help on her behalf. Unfortunately, Maeris’ life has had several trials and while she has always powered through them with courage and faith her most recent challenge has left her needing more than just words of encouragement and meals. Maeris battled breast cancer last fall and just had reconstruction surgery last week and further surgeries are still needed. While she has health insurance there are still many medical bills that need to be paid and the cost is adding up. The money we raise for her will help alleviate the intense stress and worry she has over covering these bills while she is still focusing on recovering and putting her life back together!
Maeris suffered the heartbreak of divorce in 2014 and is now a single mom of two autistic boys, Kingston (7) and Oli (4). She arranges and manages all their therapy, programs, and special schooling to ensure the best care for her children as possible.
On top of the care for her boys, she also manages to work almost full time for Ken Garff. While she never complains, I personally know she barely has the energy or time for it, and yet she still manages it all in order to help provide for her kids.
Last August, Maeris found a lump in her breast and scheduled a mammogram to have it checked out. When she got the call on August 20th saying it was cancer she was terrified. Without the support of a husband and while needing to care for two high needs children the last thing Maeris thought she could handle was cancer. She was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma or DCIS and the lump was too large for a lumpectomy, instead requiring a full mastectomy. After recovering from the initial surgery, Maeris recently underwent breast reconstruction and further surgeries will follow. She will also require frequent mammograms in the future to check the other side to insure she remains cancer free.
I have learned so much watching Maeris gracefully go through her trials. Despite more than her fair share of hardships she continues to serve everyone around her. She has always been a bright spot in her friends and families lives and never fails to keep her great sense of humor. She has taught me that God WILL give you more than you can handle but she has also shown me that though it all if you lean on Him He will strengthen you and pull you through.
