Hello everyone, my name is Monika. Today, I am reaching out to you for help because the system has completely abandoned me after an act of bravery that changed my life forever.
On August 15, 2018, my life was turned completely upside down. A severe accident occurred on the coast near the ocean. Without a second thought, I jumped into action and managed to save the lives of two young children. The price of their lives was my health. During the rescue, I fractured my neck, specifically my C5 and C6 vertebrae. At that time, I was a single mother, an athlete, held two university degrees, spoke six languages, and had two children aged 14 and 4. My eldest son witnessed the entire tragedy.
Four months later, I was officially classified with a severe disability. The only medical response I received was a prescription for morphine and psychotropic drugs. I had to fight the doctors myself just to get them to recognize that I was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). From that moment on, the State and the insurance companies turned their backs on me.
I was granted a disability pension of just €500 a month. It is impossible to survive and raise two children on this amount in Spain. Neither my children nor I received any physical or psychological therapy. Social Services simply vanished. There were days when my children and I did not even have enough money to buy bread.
The financial pressure became so unbearable that in March 2019—just seven months after breaking my neck and while heavily medicated—doctors cleared me to return to work. They knew we couldn't eat on €500. I went back to work solely for my children. At the exact same time, my mother was dying of cancer; she passed away in June 2019. The physical agony in my neck combined with the psychological grief completely shattered my health. After five months of working, my body collapsed. I have full medical records proving all of this.
Then came the pandemic in 2020. Out of my €500 pension, €400 went strictly to my mortgage. The remaining €100 couldn’t cover electricity or water, and our utilities were cut off. Banks refused to lend me money, and the State denied every social aid application I submitted. I was forced to borrow from private lenders. Ultimately, to pay off these debts and feed my children, I had to sell my apartment. We were left homeless.
In 2019, I filed a lawsuit against the responsible company and their insurer. Legally, a spinal cord injury like mine should have commanded a settlement of around €600,000. Instead, the judicial process dragged on for 7.5 years—a true living hell. Unfortunately, I fell into the hands of two corrupt lawyers who destroyed my case. After years of litigation for physical, moral, and psychological damages (I now have two herniated discs, chronic radiculopathy in my left arm, and arthritis throughout my entire spine), the court awarded a mere €80,000. To make matters worse, the lawyers kept €20,000 of it. I am currently in a legal battle against them, but I no longer have the financial resources or the strength to fight for justice alone.
Driven entirely by the love for my children, I managed to get off morphine on my own, even though I live in infernal pain every single day. For the first two years, my eldest son took care of me, waking up every two hours just to check if I was still breathing, while acting as both father and mother to his little brother. Everything I had studied and fought for was wiped out in a single second.
Every euro donated to this campaign will be strictly allocated to rebuilding our lives, securing my health, and fighting for the justice we were denied. Here is exactly how your support will be used:
1. Accessible & Safe Housing (€1500 / month or total)
The Need: Due to my C5-C6 spinal cord injury, chronic radiculopathy, and arthritis, I cannot climb stairs, walk long distances, or lift heavy objects. Additionally, severe PTSD causes debilitating panic attacks in noisy or crowded spaces.
The Allocation: Funds will go toward renting a ground-floor, barrier-free apartment in a quiet, peaceful area of the Canary Islands (as strictly mandated by my doctors for my spinal condition). This will provide a safe, stable environment for me and my youngest son.
2. Specialized Medical Equipment & Rehabilitation (1500€ one meses)
The Need: I live in constant, agonizing pain and wake up every morning with severe muscle spasms and cramps. I need a proper recovery setup to survive without relying back on heavy narcotics.
The Allocation: We will purchase an adjustable medical bed and a high-quality orthopedic mattress, custom-fitted to a specific height so I can safely get in and out of bed. Funds will also cover private physical therapy sessions, which the state system refused to provide.
3. Legal Fees for Honest Representation (€10000)
The Need: After 7.5 years of legal trauma, corrupt lawyers mismanaged my case, leaving me with a fraction of the legal compensation required for a lifelong spinal injury.
The Allocation: A portion of the funds will be used to retain a trustworthy, honest attorney to fight the insurance companies and hold the previous corrupt lawyers accountable. This is my only chance to reclaim my financial independence.
4. Basic Living Essentials for My Son and Me (€1500)
The Need: Surviving on a €500 monthly disability pension in Spain is impossible. After being forced to sell our home to pay off debts, we need a baseline of security.
The Allocation: To cover daily necessities, food, utility bills, and psychological support for my youngest son, who has endured this hardship alongside me."'
