My friend's mom is dying. And circumstances conspired to leave my friend temporarily disabled, unemployed, and stranded on the opposite end of the world.

I met Madoka as a volunteer surf instructor for girls of color. A professional yoga instructor, she gave both her gifts away for free, so those who most need a measure of self-care in our communities would have a few moments of mindfulness and joy without worrying about money.

Madoka is a person who feels deeply. Who has worked hard to show up without harmful preconceptions. Who gives you her full heart, her whole brilliant mind, and aaaaall of that deep, loud laughter.

If I could, I'd drop everything and fly her to her mom personally. Sadly, all I can do is write this note to ask you to help me pay for her tickets to Japan and cover some living costs while she's there.

Madoka's mom just found out she has a few months left. With all her children spread across the globe, she's dealing with terminal illness and working on selling her possessions alone. Months ago, Madoka tore her ACL and meniscus in an accident that left her unemployed, and burdened with healthcare bills, and a long recovery process.

Flying this soon after her surgery is risky because it could cause blood clots in her leg. But as soon as the doctors give a green light, close to a month from now, Madoka wants to fly out and spend the remainder of her mom's time with her.

There is a lot more I'm not saying because reality can be too gut-wrenching. We are truly helpless in the face of so much tragedy around. But this is one situation we can do something about. Help Madoka make it to her mama on time.
