My dear friend Madelene needs our help.
Madelene used to be one of the strongest and most energetic people I knew, leading a very full, active and healthy lifestyle; and she was always the first to offer help to anyone in need. But that all changed 5 years ago when her autoimmune system flared into severe arthritis, leaving her with painful chronic inflammation throughout her whole body. Her joints are now so badly affected that she lies twisted and immobile, in pain in a hospital bed. She can no longer walk and barely has use of her hands; she has lost over 1/3 of her body weight and about 80% of her vision. She is now completely dependent on others for all aspects of living. Without being able to move, her body is now caught in a rapid downward spiral of ongoing muscle and skeletal deterioration.
Madelene has been yearning for immersion in healing hot springs, and her healthcare practitioners are in agreement that physical therapy in warm mineral waters is what could support her in gaining back her strength and mobility before it's too late. Movement in warm water, free of the pressure of gravity on her joints, would allow recovery with much less pain and stress.
Funding is not available for this. So we are reaching out with this GoFundMe campaign. Opportunities to accommodate Madelene, her team of caregivers and the equipment needed to move her in and out of the pool and keep her as comfortable as possible, with access to the healing waters for several weeks at a time are being considered. No arrangements can be finalized until funding is secured; so any ideas of places we may not know of would be welcome, particularly within western Canada.
Watching my friend of 35 years change so drastically over these last few years has been heartbreaking. She is the one in need of help now, and I feel confident that with some financial help towards her goal of working in warm mineral waters, Madelene’s vast reserves of inner strength can bring her through this.
