Madeleine's Baroque Cello

"Where words fail, music speaks." -Hans Christian Andersen

I've never been very eloquent with words, but that is where playing the cello has always helped me. I've been playing since I was 9 years old, and have loved it from the moment I first touched one. The cello speaks in ways I can’t. Recently, I've gotten really interested in historical performance when I picked up a baroque cello for the first time. The connection was immediate! The organic feeling of the gut strings, as compared to steel, brought the instrument to life. The more I played, the more I understood that with a baroque cello, the instrument controls the musician. I am learning to let go and allow the cello to guide me.

Just so you know, a baroque cello differs mainly because it has gut strings instead of steel. One also doesn't use an endpin to hold the cello up, but rather cradles it between the legs. The gut strings offer a warmer sound and a larger variety of color of sounds. Now, I've often been told I have a lot of energy as a cellist- often too much energy! But playing the baroque cello has taught me to let the instrument and music do the speaking.  For more details of the difference between the two instruments please follow this link:

This fall, I will be returning to The Juilliard School to begin my masters degree studying baroque cello in Historical Performance with the one and only Phoebe Carrai! I am thrilled for this opportunity, and cannot wait to fully submerge myself into this specific field of music and type of cello playing. Fortunately, Phoebe has found the perfect cello for me. It is a Montagnana copy from a cellist in the Chicago Symphony. You can see some photos below.

I've saved about half the cost, while paying off student loans, and even sent a deposit to ensure the cello will be mine. Now I'd like to ask for your help. Any amount you’re able to give will help me pay for this amazing cello. Your contribution will mean the start of a new journey for me as I continue my practice on the baroque cello. It’s beyond my words to express my deep gratitude for your support. But my hope is that with this baroque cello I will say thank you through the music we make together.
