MADEIRA WILDFIRES FUNDRAISER 2024

Donation protected
We want to plant more trees in Madeira! Why is this happening again! In October 2023, the wildfires struck the west and north coast of Madeira. We decided to do a fundraiser within the community and if you remember, from that we were able to plant 500+ trees. If you took part, contributed or planted trees with your own hands, thank you!

The fires are still going and affecting areas such as Serra de Água, Ribeira Brava, Câmara de Lobos and Curral das Freiras. We're in touch with different stakeholders, from civil protection, to forest rangers to firefighters. The emergency plan was activated and we remain positive, things will get better. Right now there’s 100+ firefighters and operationals on the field, 40+ vehicles and 1 helicopter. This is a similar taskforce employed at last year’s fires. There’s also an extra 70+ men from the mainland and everyone seems to be playing their role right now. Hopefully the fires will be extinguished soon, nobody will get hurt and people won't lose their homes.

However, animals and trees are suffering a huge hit! Once again, we can't just watch it unfold and are determined to get involved as a community. Looking ahead, our focus is on planting trees, a critical need now more than ever. Starting in October, alongside Greener Act and other local partners, all funds collected will be used to restore the affected areas. For as little as 5 euros, we can plant 1 tree; with 50 euros, 10 trees; and with 500 euros, 100 trees. If you’d like to join us in this effort, your participation is more than welcome. Donate or share with your friends! Together, we can make a significant impact!

Madeira Friends exists to bridge the gap between locals and internationals. We're digital nomads, expats and locals. Giving is at the core of everything we do, and over the last few years, we've been involved with countless events, initiatives; raised funds for children, animals, and much more. This all shows once again how vulnerable Madeira is to wildfires, especially during hot and dry conditions. Both locals and internationals are coming together as one to support those affected, showing the island's strong sense of community and resilience.

madeirafriends.org is a local non-profit with NIF 516898787 and besides all the work connecting locals and internationals, it also has a great track record of giving-back and helping local entities linked to animals, kids, environment and others. Madeira Friends is a long-term social project, with the aim of giving a greater purpose and continuity to the digital nomads program started in the region by the local government and Startup Madeira. A real community is built with a mix of locals and internationals. The digital economy allows Madeira to develop without the traditional setbacks or geographical obstacles. We see a huge potential in sharing knowledge, opportunities and transferring digital skills between the international community, nomads, remote workers and locals, specially with the youth at schools. Madeira Friends was created to integrate this community on the island and at the same time ensure that this new community leaves a positive footprint for future generations, through the creation of programs with real impact, from networking to education, well-being to sustainability, promoting a true social and inclusive integration with the locals.
